How it works

The hosted MCP endpoint is available at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/riot-games/mcp. It lists the Riot Games tools along with shared Pipeworx gateway tools. The gateway's ask_pipeworx tool can route natural-language questions to available data tools, while the pack-specific tools can be called directly.

A local alternative runs @pipeworx/mcp-riot-games as an stdio process. In that mode, initialize, tools/list, and tools/call expose only the Riot Games pack's tools; the shared gateway meta-tools are not included. Both deployment options use Riot's API as the data source, with regional and platform hosts such as americas, europe, asia, na1, and euw1 selected according to the operation.

Setup and configuration

For the hosted connection, add the gateway URL to an MCP client. For local use, configure the client to run npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-riot-games. The local process communicates over standard input and output and does not require a Pipeworx account.

Authentication uses the PLATFORM_RIOT_KEY configuration value. The README also documents a BYO-key _apiKey query parameter for HTTP requests. Riot's free development key is described as valid for 24 hours with a limit of 100 requests per two minutes; production use requires applying for a permanent key.

The standalone package does not provide the gateway's shared routing or memory tools. The hosted pack endpoint does include those shared tools, so its reported tool count is larger than the Riot-specific list. The gateway documentation says its initialize response is the authoritative source for the exact scope at connection time.

The deprecated summoner_by_name operation remains documented, but the README recommends the Riot ID flow instead. The package does not front a Riot API key for unauthenticated HTTP examples; callers must supply their own key. Riot API rate limits and key lifetime therefore apply to requests made through this server.
