Overview

opengmb-mcp connects MCP clients to Google Business Profile management through OpenGMB. It exposes roughly 250 tools for reviews, replies, posts, profile edits, performance data, health checks, and local rank tracking. Actions use the same permissions, guardrails, approval workflow, and audit log as the OpenGMB web app. Reach for it when agents should prepare or organize GBP work while a person retains control over publication.

Use cases

  • Draft replies for low-star reviews across multiple locations
  • Schedule posts for a group of business profiles
  • Compare monthly calls, clicks, impressions, and direction requests
  • Check profile health and prepare approved edits
  • Track local rankings around each business location

Key features

  • Roughly 250 MCP tools
  • Google Business Profile management
  • Approval workflows for writes
  • Guardrail checks and audit logging
  • Performance reporting and rank tracking
  • Read-only and read-write API tokens

How Opengmb MCP works

What opengmb-mcp does

opengmb-mcp exposes OpenGMB’s Google Business Profile operations to MCP-compatible clients. It supports work across multiple locations, including reading reviews, drafting and submitting replies, creating and scheduling posts, editing profile details, checking location health, retrieving performance data, and running local rank tracking.

The community edition is self-hosted and communicates with Google through the official Business Profile API. It also includes OpenGMB functions such as review assignments and notes, approval queues, reports, review-request links, location groups, REST API access, outgoing webhooks, and an append-only audit log.

How it works

An MCP client connects to the /mcp endpoint with an API token. OpenGMB routes requests from the web application, MCP server, REST API, and background worker through the same action executor. Permissions, guardrail checks, approvals, and audit logging therefore apply regardless of which interface initiates an action.

Tokens can be read-only or read-write. A human-in-the-loop token can create and submit drafts but cannot approve or publish them. Posts and profile edits require approval. Replies to one- through three-star reviews always require a person, while replies to four- and five-star reviews can be auto-approved only when the owner enables that option for the client.

Guardrails inspect replies, posts, and edits for items such as links, contact details, offers, unsuitable hours, and banned words. Blocking rules cannot be overridden, and warnings must be acknowledged. The checks run again immediately before content is sent to Google.

Setup and configuration

The community edition runs with Docker Compose. Docker Engine 24 or newer, the Compose plugin, and about 4 GB of free RAM during image builds are required. A public HTTPS hostname is needed for Google sign-in.

Clone the repository, enter deploy/selfhost, copy .env.example to .env, and set the owner email and password before starting the stack:

sh
git clone https://github.com/synectus/OpenGMB.git
cd OpenGMB/deploy/selfhost
cp .env.example .env
docker compose up -d --build

The web interface is available at http://localhost:8080. Two-factor sign-in is required, so an authenticator app and backup codes are needed. The Google connection initially supports a sample account and mock data. Live use requires approval for Business Profile API access in a Google Cloud project.

After signing in, create an API token under Settings → API tokens. A Claude Code connection can use the streamable HTTP endpoint with a bearer token:

Terminal
claude mcp add --transport http opengmb https://your-mcp-host/mcp \
  --header "Authorization: Bearer sgmb_your_token"

Frequently Asked Questions about Opengmb MCP

opengmb-mcp is an MCP server that connects AI clients to OpenGMB and Google Business Profile accounts. Its main tools manage reviews and replies, posts, profile edits, performance data, health checks, and local rank tracking. Write operations pass through permissions, guardrails, approvals, and audit logging before publication.

Install it by self-hosting OpenGMB with Docker Compose, then connect an MCP client to the `/mcp` endpoint using an API token. Docker Engine 24 or newer, the Compose plugin, owner credentials, and roughly 4 GB of build-time RAM are required.

No, posts require human approval before publication. The MCP tools can create or schedule post drafts and submit them to the approval queue, but a human must approve them before Google receives the change.

Yes, opengmb-mcp works with Cursor through its MCP connection. Cursor can use the server’s tools for reviews, replies, posts, profile changes, performance queries, and other OpenGMB actions, subject to the token permissions and approval rules.

Connect Claude Code with the HTTP transport, the server’s `/mcp` URL, and a bearer API token. The command uses `claude mcp add --transport http`, followed by the server URL and an `Authorization: Bearer` header.
