What Uruguay: datos públicos MCP server does
Uruguay: datos públicos MCP server gives MCP-compatible agents access to public information from primary sources in Uruguay and the region. Its read-only tools cover BCU exchange rates and inflation adjustments, Argentine and Brazilian price indexes, ANCAP fuel data, weather and hydrological observations, geographic lookup, demographic information, elections, government procurement, parliamentary activity, laws, legislative projects, social indicators, and open-data catalog files.
The server also includes offline utilities for validating RUT and identity-card check digits and for calculating ISO weeks. Queries return the source that publishes the information and the time when the copy used by the server was retrieved. Several tools preserve warnings from the source, such as incomplete observations, partial months, missing publication periods, ambiguous names, and data-quality issues.
How it works
The server is built on the uydatos project and uses a reject-rather-than-correct approach. When input or source data cannot support a reliable answer, a tool returns an explanation instead of silently producing a plausible replacement. All tools are declared read-only to the MCP client.
Economic tools retrieve daily or monthly exchange rates, convert historical amounts using the Unidad Indexada or regional inflation measures, and compare fuel prices with import parity. Weather and river tools provide historical or daily observations, anomalies, trends, station comparisons, and nearby hydrometeorological stations. Public-sector tools query elections, state purchases, parliamentary attendance and information requests, laws, projects, and MIDES indicators. Five supplied prompts combine related tools for recurring analyses, and four resources document sources, common traps, stations, and BCU currency meanings.
Downloaded material is stored in ~/.cache/mcp-uruguay by default. Completed periods are reused, while current or changing datasets expire on schedules defined by the server. A failed or unreadable download does not replace a previously valid cached copy. The first climate query downloads INIA's historical series and can take about a minute; later requests use the cache.
Setup and configuration
The server requires uv and does not require a repository checkout. For Claude Code, add it with claude mcp add uruguay -- uvx mcp-uruguay. Other MCP clients can use a server entry whose command is uvx and whose argument is mcp-uruguay.
Set MCP_URUGUAY_CACHE to move the cache directory from its default location. No API key or other credential is documented in the provided setup instructions. Developers working on the repository can run the test suite with uv run --with pytest --with-editable . pytest; a separate marker runs tests against live sources.
Limitations and notes
Uruguay: datos públicos MCP server is read-only: it does not mutate source systems or submit public-sector requests. Coverage and freshness depend on the named publishers, their publication schedules, and the cache expiration rules. Some answers are intentionally incomplete when a day is not fully observed or a source has not published a period.
The tool descriptions identify important interpretation constraints. For example, local-day aggregation uses UTC-3 for INUMET observations, river comparisons account for the corresponding period in earlier years, and geocoding rejects weak matches such as a different street or a locality center. These details matter when using results in automated analysis.
