What the DunkAPI MCP server does
DunkAPI MCP server connects an MCP client to DunkAPI's basketball data API. It covers NBA, WNBA, men's Division I college basketball, and women's Division I college basketball. The available data includes schedules, scores, standings, injuries, player profiles, team metrics, play-by-play events, shot coordinates, sportsbook lines, and player prop results.
The service is suitable for questions that require structured basketball data across games or seasons. Examples include comparing team efficiency, reviewing a player's game log, identifying shot locations by zone, checking closing lines, or measuring a player's results against historical prop lines. League selection is supported through a league parameter, with NBA as the default.
How it works
DunkAPI MCP server is hosted at https://mcp.dunkapi.com/mcp and uses Streamable HTTP, so there is no local MCP package to install. Add the endpoint to an MCP-compatible client and provide an API key in the URL, an x-api-key header, or an Authorization: Bearer header. A connection can enumerate the tools without authentication, but tool calls require a key.
The same service exposes REST-style POST endpoints at /v1/{tool}. Each request sends its arguments as JSON. The repository also includes standard-library Python and Node 18 examples, plus Claude skills that describe when to use the tools and how to analyze returned data. Those skills can be used with the server or with local CSV and JSON files; local-file use does not require an API key.
Setup and configuration
For Claude Code, register the remote endpoint with its HTTP transport and an API key. Claude Desktop, Cursor, and other MCP clients can use the same URL in their MCP server configuration. The repository documents the following environment variable for its example scripts:
DUNKAPI_API_KEY: API key used by the Python and Node examples.
Keys are available through DunkAPI's signup page. The service includes 500 free credits per month without a card; paid plans and additional credit options are described separately by the provider.
Tools and capabilities
DunkAPI MCP server exposes 18 tools, including:
- Discover teams, players, games, schedules, standings, injuries, leaders, and Elo ratings.
- Retrieve player profiles, seasonal averages, shooting splits, recent games, and complete game logs.
- Inspect team pace, offensive rating, defensive rating, net rating, and the four factors.
- Query game box scores, player lines, win probabilities, play-by-play events, shot zones, and individual shot coordinates.
- Compare sportsbook moneylines, spreads, totals, line movement, player props, opening and closing prices, and results against the line.
Limitations and notes
Coverage differs by league, season, and data type. NBA play-by-play and shot-location data extends back to the 2003-04 season. Prop availability begins in May 2023 for NBA and WNBA data and in the 2023-24 season for men's college basketball; women's college basketball has no player props in the stated coverage. Injury data is listed for NBA and WNBA, while sportsbook history varies by season and source.
The data combines public ESPN data with sportsbook information from ESPN and The Odds API. Team ratings are produced by DunkAPI. The provider states that it is not affiliated with the NBA, WNBA, NCAA, or any team, so applications should check the documented coverage before depending on a particular league, date range, sportsbook, or metric.
