What crowntowncompost-mcp does

The crowntowncompost-mcp MCP server connects to the customer portal at portal.crowntowncompost.com, not the public Crown Town Compost marketing site. It gives an MCP-compatible client access to customer-specific information and selected account actions through natural-language requests.

Read operations cover account health, subscription details, renewal date, next service date, service addresses, pickup days, environmental impact, contact information, notification preferences, collection history, upcoming services, and invoice records. Collection history includes outcomes, times, weights, and services, with pagination and outcome filters. Invoice results include amounts, payment status, and hosted Stripe links; payment itself remains outside the server.

Write operations can skip or restore a scheduled collection, change contact or notification settings, report a missed pickup, and send a message to customer support. These actions are confirmation-gated, so the client or conversation must approve the exact change before it is submitted.

How it works

The server authenticates against the Crown Town Compost portal on the server side. You can provide a signed-in browser session as CROWNTOWN_SESSION_COOKIE, or provide CROWNTOWN_USERNAME and CROWNTOWN_PASSWORD so the server can perform the portal's normal form login. Supplying both is supported: the session cookie is tried first, and the login credentials can create a replacement when the cookie expires.

After authentication, the server reads the same portal pages and JSON endpoints used by the customer website. crowntown_healthcheck reports whether authentication and account access work. If access fails, its error classification identifies conditions such as missing credentials, rejected credentials, an expired session, a blocked edge, a timeout, transport failure, or an HTTP error.

Mutation confirmation depends on the client. Clients that support prompts can display a confirmation request. On clients without that facility, the first call returns a preview and one-use confirmation token; a repeat call with the unchanged arguments and token performs the operation. Tokens expire and become invalid if the proposed data changes.

Setup and configuration

Install the package globally with npm install -g crowntowncompost-mcp, then register it with an MCP host using the package command through npx, or another equivalent stdio configuration. The process can start without credentials, allowing an installation probe to complete, but the first tool call will report the missing configuration.

Set either the session-cookie variable or the username/password pair. A cookie value should be the Cookie header from a signed-in browser session, such as a value containing sessionid and csrftoken. For local development, the repository supports copying .env.example to .env.

Confirmation behavior can be adjusted with MCP_CONFIRM_MODE, MCP_CONFIRM_ELICITATION, MCP_CONFIRM_TTL_SECONDS, and MCP_CONFIRM_SECRET. The mode controls whether unsupported clients ask, automatically approve after preview, or refuse writes. The other settings control prompt handling, token lifetime, and optional token persistence across restarts.
