How Chess works

What chess does

The chess MCP server exposes Chess.com public data to MCP-compatible clients. It belongs in the 🎮 Gaming category and is intended for lookups about Chess.com players, ratings, completed games, and competitive rankings. The integration is independent and unofficial; it is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or published by Chess.com.

Four pack-specific tools are available:

  • get_player retrieves a profile by username, including title, country, follower count, join date, and most recent online time.
  • get_stats returns ratings and game records for daily, rapid, blitz, and bullet formats. Results include current and best ratings plus wins, losses, and draws.
  • get_games retrieves completed games for one player and one month. The month uses YYYY/MM, and results include game URLs, time controls, outcomes, and ratings.
  • get_leaderboards returns top players for daily, rapid, blitz, or bullet, with ratings and win percentages.

How it works

The chess MCP server can be reached through the hosted Pipeworx endpoint at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/chess/mcp. A connected MCP client can discover and call the pack's tools there. The scoped endpoint also exposes shared Pipeworx meta-tools, so its tool list is larger than the four Chess.com tools. The initialize response is the authoritative source for the tools exposed at connection time.

The gateway's ask_pipeworx tool can route a plain-language question to an appropriate tool and populate its arguments. The full Pipeworx endpoint, https://gateway.pipeworx.io/mcp, is another connection option; both endpoints use the same gateway and data sources, while the scoped endpoint lists the chess tools directly.

Direct HTTP calls are also available through the gateway's tool API. For example, a client can send a JSON POST request to /v1/tools/chess_get_player with a username value. The first calls do not require an account.

Setup and configuration

For a remote connection, add the hosted URL to an MCP client configuration. The README specifically shows Claude Desktop, Cursor, and Windsurf configurations using the url field.

For local use, run npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-chess or configure an MCP client with the @pipeworx/mcp-chess package as a command. This mode uses stdin and stdout, needs no Pipeworx account, and avoids a gateway round trip. The local process exposes only the four chess tools, without the gateway's shared meta-tools.

No environment variables are documented or required. Chess.com authentication is not required because the integration uses the public API.

Limitations and notes

This chess MCP server provides public Chess.com data lookup, not move generation, game analysis, engine evaluation, or game-play controls. get_games requires a specific month in YYYY/MM format. Ratings are separated by the formats returned by Chess.com, including daily, rapid, blitz, and bullet.

The hosted and local modes expose the same pack tools, but they differ in surrounding gateway behavior. Hosted connections include shared Pipeworx tools and can use cross-catalog routing through ask_pipeworx; the standalone process does not. The package is licensed under MIT.
