What Uganda Online Business Directory does
Uganda Online Business Directory MCP server exposes a Ugandan business directory to MCP-compatible AI tools. The project combines a Cloudflare Worker backend with a Neon Postgres database and also provides a web interface for account management and business listings.
The MCP endpoint is available at /mcp. Agents can search the directory by keyword, category, or district, retrieve a specific business record, and request the available business categories. This makes the server relevant for location-aware discovery tasks involving companies and services in Uganda.
Directory results are ordered by listing tier, with higher tiers appearing before lower tiers. The documented order is black, green, blue, and free.
How it works
Requests go through the deployed Cloudflare Worker, which uses the configured Neon Postgres connection to access directory data. The server exposes three MCP tools: search_businesses, get_business, and list_categories.
search_businesses supports directory discovery using the supported search dimensions: keyword, category, and district. get_business is intended for retrieving one business listing, while list_categories provides category data that can help an agent construct or refine a search.
The broader application includes phone-and-password accounts, business listing creation, and tier-based limits. Those web application features are separate from the core MCP tool list, but they affect which listings are present and how many listings may appear in search results.
Setup and configuration
To run the project, initialize the database by executing schema.sql in a Neon SQL console. Install the Node.js dependencies with npm install, then store the Neon connection string as the Cloudflare Worker secret DATABASE_URL using Wrangler.
Use npm run dev for local development and npm run deploy to deploy the Worker. The published MCP URL is https://ug-online.domus-dei-tech.workers.dev/mcp. A deployment therefore requires a Neon database, the database connection secret, and a Cloudflare Workers environment.
Tools and capabilities
The Uganda Online Business Directory MCP server provides:
search_businesses for finding listings by keyword, category, or district.
get_business for retrieving an individual business listing.
list_categories for discovering directory categories.
- Tier-ordered search results, with higher listing tiers shown first.
- A web application for signing in, adding listings, and managing directory accounts.
Limitations and notes
Listing creation and search visibility depend on account tier. Free accounts can create three listings and have one of their listings appear in search. Basic accounts have limits of five created and three searchable listings; Pro accounts have limits of seven and five; Premium accounts have no stated limit for either function.
Paid tiers only apply while an active subscription exists. The README states that no flow currently creates subscriptions, although pricing and payment-related pages are present. Paid-tier verification uses PesaPal for payment and UgaText for SMS phone verification.
Account passwords are hashed with PBKDF2, and an account is locked for 15 minutes after five failed login attempts. These authentication details apply to the web application; the provided material does not document additional MCP-specific authentication requirements.
