What the Subo MCP server does
The Subo MCP server gives an AI application access to a Subo community through MCP. Subo projects can represent forms, surveys, polls, or quizzes that run in Discord and on the web. An agent can turn a natural-language request into a project, revise its questions, check the project script, and open it for members to use.
The hosted service is available at https://api.subo.ai/mcp, so the repository does not require local installation or a separately managed process. The connection uses streamable HTTP and authenticates with a Subo API key in the Authorization header.
How it works
The Subo MCP server exposes 43 operations covering project management and related community administration. These operations include creating, modifying, copying, validating, opening, closing, and removing projects. Agents can also update a project’s script in individual blocks, retrieve member responses, and read AI-generated analysis.
Additional operations cover member XP and accomplishments, template discovery and copying, webhook management, and reading or changing community settings. Each operation identifies its impact as read-only, a normal change, an outward action, or a destructive action. Outward actions affect real members, such as opening a project or awarding XP; destructive actions remove data. Client applications can use these labels to request confirmation before consequential calls.
Subo applies server-side restrictions as well. For example, an open project cannot be deleted through the API, regardless of how an agent requests the operation.
Setup and configuration
Create an API key in the Subo web application under Account and API Access. The key should represent a bot or agent. Creating it requires the community’s Admin role, although the key can be assigned Creator-level access to reduce the agent’s permissions.
Configure the remote MCP connection with the endpoint and a custom header similar to this:
{
"mcpServers": {
"subo": {
"type": "http",
"url": "https://api.subo.ai/mcp",
"headers": {
"Authorization": "Bearer sbo_live_…"
}
}
}
}
Claude Code can add the connection from a terminal with its HTTP transport command, then verify it with /mcp; the connection should report 43 tools. Other clients need support for remote MCP servers and custom headers. The service is hosted by Subo, so there is no server package to install or run.
Keep the API key in the client configuration rather than placing it in prompts, documents, or screenshots. A key applies to one community and uses the current permissions of its owner. Revoke it from the Subo Account page if it is exposed.
Tools and capabilities
The available operations support these workflows:
- Build and revise Discord forms, surveys, polls, and quizzes.
- Validate project scripts before opening a project.
- Open and close projects for participation.
- Inspect responses and available AI analysis.
- Browse and duplicate project templates.
- Track member XP and accomplishments.
- Create and manage webhooks.
- Read or update community settings.
The Subo MCP server does not create, rotate, or delete API keys. It also cannot change community access control or add a new verified-audience source; that connection requires a person to sign in.
Limitations and notes
Requests use the Public API rate limit for the selected Subo plan. Plans that allow API-key creation include MCP access without a separate enablement step or purchase.
The repository documentation reports testing with Claude Code and Grok Bot. In general, any AI application that can connect to a remote MCP server using a custom header may be able to use the endpoint, but client configuration details vary. The official registry name is gg.subo/survey-bot.
Treat outward and destructive operations as approval points in an agent workflow. Although clients can use the operation labels to ask for confirmation, Subo still enforces its own project-state and permission rules.
