Overview

  • sec
  • edgar
  • financial-data
  • xbrl
  • developer-tools

The sec MCP server queries SEC EDGAR for US public-company searches, filing histories, and XBRL financial facts. It can run locally over stdio or remotely through the Pipeworx gateway, with no account or API key required for standalone use. Use it to identify companies, inspect filings, or retrieve annual metrics such as revenue, income, assets, and EPS. EDGAR coverage is limited to US-registered filers, and the server handles retired XBRL concepts and restated annual figures.

Use cases

  • Search EDGAR for a company and resolve its CIK
  • Review recent 10-K, 10-Q, and 8-K filings
  • Compare annual XBRL financial metrics across years
  • Identify replaced or stale financial concepts

Key features

  • Keyless SEC EDGAR access
  • Company search by name or ticker
  • Recent filing lookup
  • Annual XBRL financial facts
  • Retired-concept and replacement tracking
  • Local stdio and remote HTTP access

How Sec works

What the sec MCP server does

The sec MCP server gives AI agents access to public SEC EDGAR data for US-registered companies. It supports full-text company lookup, recent filing history, and XBRL company facts. A lookup can resolve a company name, ticker, or CIK, while financial queries return annual data such as revenue, net income, operating income, gross profit, assets, liabilities, equity, cash, EPS, and share counts.

The package is intended for research and analysis workflows that need public filings without a private data-provider credential. It does not provide general coverage of every global listing: companies that file only in foreign markets are absent unless they also submit filings in the United States.

How it works

The sec MCP server reads from three SEC endpoints: the EDGAR full-text search index, company submission histories, and the XBRL companyfacts API. It sends the descriptive User-Agent required by the SEC, so callers do not need to supply authentication credentials.

Annual-data selection avoids several common companyfacts errors. Fiscal years are derived from the reporting period end rather than the filing's fy field. The server ignores frame when selecting annual records and prefers annual-report forms, using the latest filing as a tie-breaker when figures were restated. Older concepts remain available for historical series but are marked as stale when the filer has moved to a replacement concept.

Setup and configuration

For a remote connection, add https://gateway.pipeworx.io/sec/mcp as an MCP server URL. The gateway endpoint includes the SEC pack tools and shared Pipeworx meta-tools, including routing and discovery functions. The full gateway at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/mcp can also expose the broader catalog.

For a local connection, run the package with npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-sec and configure the command as a stdio MCP server. This mode requires no Pipeworx account and exposes only the SEC pack tools. The same tools can also be called over the gateway's HTTP tool endpoint.

Tools and capabilities

  • search_companies(query) searches EDGAR company records and returns matching entities with CIKs.
  • get_company_filings(cik, form_type?) retrieves recent filings for a CIK, ticker, or company name, optionally filtered by form such as 10-K, 10-Q, or 8-K.
  • get_company_facts(cik) returns XBRL company facts and the annual financial view.
  • latest_annual presents the most recent annual values using the concepts currently reported by the filer.
  • key_financials provides per-concept historical detail, including concepts that have been retired.
  • stale_note identifies a retired concept and names its replacement when available.

Not-found results explain whether EDGAR has no such CIK, the entity has no XBRL data, or the supplied name or ticker did not resolve. Responses also point callers toward filing lookup or ticker-to-CIK resolution when appropriate.

Limitations and notes

SEC EDGAR covers US-registered filers only. Funds, trusts, and individuals may exist in EDGAR but have no XBRL companyfacts; for those entities, filing history is the relevant fallback. A remote pack endpoint also lists shared gateway tools, so its tool count is larger than the SEC-specific list. Use the local stdio mode when only the SEC tools are needed and extra gateway schemas are undesirable.

The sec MCP server is MIT-licensed. Its data comes from SEC public APIs, so availability and coverage follow those sources.

Frequently Asked Questions about Sec

sec is an MCP server that connects AI agents to SEC EDGAR public APIs. Its main tools search companies, retrieve recent filings, and read XBRL company facts, including annual metrics such as revenue, income, assets, cash, EPS, and shares. It requires no API key and supports local stdio or Pipeworx gateway access.

Run `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-sec` and configure that command as a stdio MCP server. This local mode needs no Pipeworx account. You can instead add `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/sec/mcp` as a remote MCP URL.

Yes, sec works with Cursor through the remote MCP URL documented in the README. Add `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/sec/mcp` to Cursor's MCP configuration, or use the local npx stdio configuration.

No, the sec MCP server is keyless. It accesses SEC public APIs and sends the descriptive User-Agent required by the SEC. The standalone package also runs without a Pipeworx account.

Only when the company also files in the United States. SEC EDGAR does not include companies that are solely foreign listings, such as listings absent from the US filing system.
