Overview

The scrumboy MCP server connects MCP-compatible clients such as Claude and Cursor to a self-hosted project-management and issue-tracking instance. Agents can use Scrumboy tools to manage projects and stories while the application retains control of its data and authentication. Scrumboy runs locally or in Docker, with SQLite storage created under its data directory by default. Reach for it when agent-assisted project updates should stay within an operator-managed deployment rather than a hosted SaaS platform.

Use cases

  • Manage project stories from an MCP-compatible assistant
  • Automate issue-tracking updates in a self-hosted deployment
  • Review and update sprint work through an AI client
  • Keep agent-assisted project operations on local infrastructure

Key features

  • MCP access for project and story management
  • Custom workflows, priorities, tags, and sprints
  • Realtime collaboration on project boards
  • JSON export and import with Trello migration
  • Outbound webhooks and audit logging
  • Self-hosted Docker and source deployments

How Scrumboy works

What scrumboy does

scrumboy provides a self-hosted project-management and issue-tracking application with MCP access for AI agents. MCP-compatible clients can use its project and story tools to work with the same data available through the Scrumboy application.

Projects support configurable workflows, colored columns, priority tiers, tags, sprints, due dates, archival, filtering, and a dedicated Done lane. Realtime collaboration keeps board changes synchronized as users create, update, or move stories. The application also includes audit events, JSON export and import, Trello board migration, optional email notifications, outbound webhooks, authentication, and optional two-factor authentication.

How it works

Scrumboy runs as a local or self-hosted web application. The official Docker image is available from GitHub Container Registry, and the application can also be built with Docker Compose or started from source with Go. By default, runtime data is stored under ./data, including a SQLite database at ./data/app.db.

The MCP interface uses JSON-RPC and allows compatible AI clients to operate on projects and stories. Claude, Cursor, and other MCP-compatible clients are identified as supported client types. Scrumboy remains the system holding the project data, while the client supplies the agent interface.

Setup and configuration

The quickest deployment uses the published Docker image:

Terminal
docker run -d \
  --name scrumboy \
  -p 127.0.0.1:8080:8080 \
  -v scrumboy-data:/data \
  ghcr.io/markrai/scrumboy:latest

Open http://localhost:8080 after the container starts. Mounting /data preserves application data when the container is recreated. A local build is available with docker compose up --build, and a source checkout can be run with go run ./cmd/scrumboy.

No environment file, TLS certificate, or encryption key is needed for the initial startup. Optional configuration covers SMTP, OIDC/SSO, HTTPS, web push, and encryption-dependent features such as TOTP and password-reset email. The Android client connects to an existing Scrumboy server and does not run the server itself.

Tools and capabilities

MCP-connected agents can manage Scrumboy projects and stories. The surrounding application provides:

  • Custom project workflows, priorities, tags, sprints, and story filters
  • Story creation, updates, movement, due dates, archival, and restoration
  • Realtime collaboration on project boards
  • JSON export and import, including full or single-project scopes
  • Trello JSON board import with a preview before importing
  • Webhook events for story changes, assignment, and due-soon reminders
  • Audit logging for project, member, todo, and link actions

Limitations and notes

Scrumboy's JSON export is not a complete disaster-recovery backup: uploaded wallpapers and audit events are excluded. Webhook delivery is asynchronous and best-effort. Due-date reminder email requires SMTP configuration and user opt-in.

The Android application must be built from source, and release builds require HTTPS when connecting to the server. macOS release binaries require macOS 12 Monterey or later and are not Apple-signed or notarized. Anonymous and public board features depend on the relevant server modes and operator settings.

Frequently Asked Questions about Scrumboy

scrumboy is an MCP server that connects MCP-compatible AI clients, including Claude and Cursor, to a self-hosted Scrumboy project-management instance. Its main tools let agents manage projects and stories, making it suitable for automating issue-tracking work while keeping data in an operator-controlled Scrumboy deployment.

Run Scrumboy with the published Docker image, Docker Compose, or from source with Go. The Docker deployment exposes port 8080 and persists data through a mounted `/data` volume; after startup, configure an MCP-compatible client to connect to the running Scrumboy instance.

Yes, Cursor is listed as an MCP-compatible client for Scrumboy. It can connect to the running self-hosted application and use Scrumboy's tools to manage projects and stories.

No, an environment file is not required for initial startup. Scrumboy creates runtime data under `./data` by default; optional settings cover features such as SMTP, OIDC/SSO, HTTPS, web push, and encryption-dependent authentication.
