What Rootz Archive MCP server does
Rootz Archive MCP server makes a local archive of Claude Code activity available for search. The archive contains byte-for-byte copies of conversations, including content from before compaction, sub-agent conversations, and files edited by Claude. It also maintains a searchable database on the same computer.
The archive is intended for questions about prior work, such as locating a session where an upload issue was fixed or recalling a decision about a login flow. Answers identify the local source with the text “Source: Rootz Archive · this computer”. Claude can also summarize previously unsummarized sessions and add those summaries to the search without replacing the original conversations.
How it works
The Claude Code plugin captures conversations and edited files locally. Captured data is stored under ~/.rootz-archive/vault on macOS and Linux, or %USERPROFILE%\.rootz-archive\vault on Windows. The searchable database is stored under ~/.rootz-desktop/archives.db, with the corresponding Windows location in %APPDATA%\.rootz-desktop\archives.db.
Rootz Archive checks stored copies against their fingerprints daily and does not delete them itself. The archive uses restrictive local permissions, with directories set to 0700 and files to 0600. The plugin makes no network connections for capture. When Claude reads archive content to answer a request, that content is sent to Anthropic in the same way as other information provided to Claude.
Setup and configuration
Rootz Archive MCP server can be installed for Claude Desktop by downloading the versioned .mcpb file from a release and opening it with Claude Desktop. It is also listed in the Official MCP Registry as global.rootz/archive. In Claude Desktop, enable the extension and accept the Rootz Archive Use Licence in Settings → Extensions → Rootz Archive.
Claude Desktop provides search access, but continuous exact-copy capture requires the Claude Code plugin. Install that plugin through the Rootz marketplace, start a new Claude Code session, and run /rootz-archive:accept. No capture occurs before the licence is accepted. Node.js 22.13 or newer is required. Windows users who encounter an EBUSY marketplace error can install from a local clone instead.

Limitations and notes
Rootz Archive MCP server is not a backup service; archive backups remain the user’s responsibility. Uninstalling the plugin does not remove existing archive data, and deleting it requires following the project’s documented procedure. Captured conversations may include pasted secrets or other people’s personal data, so users must review material before sharing it.
The Claude Desktop package is documented as search-only. Linux support is still in testing, while macOS and Windows are tested. The share output contains the complete conversation, and receipt verification is performed in a browser without uploading the content. The Rootz Archive Use Licence applies to installation and use.
