What Pyunto Diary MCP server does
The Pyunto Diary MCP server lets an MCP client interact with a Pyunto diary from a computer. It is designed for the MCP mode of pyunto-agent, where Claude Code or Claude Desktop asks for diary data when prompted rather than receiving messages in the background.
The connection supports reading and searching past entries, summarizing a period of diary activity, and posting a new entry. The diary can still be used from the Pyunto mobile app, so entries written on a phone can be accessed from the desktop client and vice versa.
How it works
The Pyunto Diary MCP server uses its own Pyunto account and X25519 identity key. Pairing is handled through the pair tool, which displays a QR code for scanning in the Pyunto app. After a diary is selected and access is approved, the MCP client can use the available diary tools.
Pyunto's service remains unchanged and handles encrypted data. Plaintext decryption occurs in the local process running pyunto-agent; the README states that the remote service sees ciphertext only. Unlike the run mode, MCP mode does not monitor the diary or answer without a request. The user starts each interaction in Claude Code or Claude Desktop.
Setup and configuration
Use Python 3.11 or newer. The documented installation creates a virtual environment and installs the optional QR dependency:
python3.12 -m venv ~/pyunto-env
source ~/pyunto-env/bin/activate
pip install 'pyunto-agent[qr]'
Register the MCP command with Claude using:
claude mcp add pyunto-diary -- uvx pyunto-agent mcp
Once the server is added, ask Claude to pair. The pair tool provides the QR code to scan with the Pyunto app, so pairing does not require a separate terminal command. The README also documents Claude API and Claude Code backends for the package's separate run mode; those backend settings are not needed to describe the MCP interaction itself.
Tools and capabilities
The Pyunto Diary MCP server exposes 12 tools. The README specifically shows these capabilities and tool names:
pair for connecting the account to a Pyunto diary through a QR code.
read_thread for retrieving diary conversation content.
post_entry for writing an entry from the desktop client.
- Diary searching and related operations for finding and working with existing entries.
These tools support requests such as finding earlier notes about a topic, reviewing a week of entries, or recording information after Claude has helped compose it.
Limitations and notes
The Pyunto Diary MCP server is request-driven. It does not act as a continuously running contact or reply to new mobile entries on its own; that behavior belongs to pyunto-agent run.
A Pyunto account, identity key, and an approved diary pairing are required. The documented client examples are Claude Code and Claude Desktop. The README does not provide a list of additional MCP clients, transport alternatives, or a license declaration. Keep the MCP process on a machine where local decryption is acceptable, since plaintext is handled there.
