Overview

openvan-travel connects AI assistants to OpenVan.camp’s free, no-auth travel API through 32 read-only MCP tools. It covers route roadbooks, fuel and toll costs, entry rules, holidays, hazards, ferries, weather, currency, food prices, and vehicle-travel data. Use the hosted MCP endpoint at `https://mcp.openvan.camp/mcp`, or run the package locally with `npx -y @openvancamp/mcp-server`. It fits travel assistants and trip-planning agents that need structured vanlife and RV data without API credentials.

Use cases

  • Plan a multi-country van trip with a day-by-day roadbook
  • Estimate fuel and toll costs for a route
  • Check visa, customs, and vehicle-import requirements
  • Find ferry crossings and upcoming departures
  • Compare weather and food costs between destinations

Key features

  • 32 read-only MCP tools
  • Whole-trip roadbook generation
  • Fuel and toll route calculations
  • Visa, customs, and vehicle-import lookups
  • Weather suitability and climate data
  • Ferry, hazard, holiday, and travel-cost data

How Openvan Travel works

What openvan-travel does

openvan-travel exposes OpenVan.camp travel data to AI assistants through the Model Context Protocol. Its read-only tools are designed for vanlife and RV planning, covering both individual country lookups and multi-stop route calculations.

The server can create a whole-trip roadbook from two to ten place names, including a day-by-day plan, estimated budget, country-specific entry information, and vehicle rules. Route-focused tools also calculate fuel costs and toll ranges. Other data areas include retail fuel prices for gasoline, diesel, LPG, and E85; public and school holidays; peak traffic days; travel advisories; natural disasters; active fires; ferry crossings and schedules; power plugs; customs; exchange rates; food-price comparisons; weather suitability; visas; vehicle imports; vanlife events; news; and license plates.

How it works

The MCP server accesses the OpenVan.camp API, which uses https://openvan.camp as its base URL and requires no authentication or registration. The hosted MCP endpoint is available at https://mcp.openvan.camp/mcp. A local installation can run the server through the npm package and connect it to an MCP client over the client’s local server configuration.

Most tools are read-only queries. Route tools accept multiple waypoints or place names, while country and city tools return focused results such as visa conditions, weather breakdowns, ferry information, or electrical standards. Roadbook generation is asynchronous: clients can create a roadbook and poll its status until it is ready. The roadbook response includes a shareable page.

Setup and configuration

For local use, run:

Terminal
npx -y @openvancamp/mcp-server

The package can be used with Claude Desktop, Cursor, or Windsurf. The hosted server can also be connected through the OpenVan.camp Gemini CLI extension, which requires no API key. Claude Code and Codex integrations provide the hosted MCP server along with OpenVan.camp agent skills for travel questions and API-oriented coding tasks.

No environment variables or API credentials are required to run the server. Applications displaying returned data must provide the attribution Data: OpenVan.camp with a link to https://openvan.camp/. The data is licensed under CC BY 4.0; the MCP server code is MIT-licensed.

Tools and capabilities

The available tool set includes:

  • Build roadbooks for routes with two to ten places, and check roadbook build status.
  • Calculate fuel and toll costs for routes, with country-specific pricing and vehicle classes.
  • Query fuel prices, exchange rates, food-cost indexes, electricity standards, customs rules, and public holidays.
  • Check visas, passport destinations, and temporary vehicle-import rules.
  • Find ferries and river crossings, operator links, booking links, and timetable details.
  • Review VanSky weather scores, forecasts, rankings, climate history, marine conditions, and solar data.
  • Inspect travel advisories, active fires, vanlife events, news stories, and license-plate information.

The API also enables route and country comparisons, including food costs between two countries and visa rules across a route.

Limitations and notes

Results are intended for travel planning and depend on the underlying OpenVan.camp datasets. Coverage varies by endpoint: the service lists country coverage ranging from roughly 80 countries for toll data to more than 200 for holidays or electricity information, while some route and city queries have their own constraints. Fire searches use a bounding box of up to 10 degrees by 10 degrees, and route inputs generally support two to ten stops.

Ferry schedules are timetable digests from open GTFS feeds, while ferry locations and links use OpenStreetMap data. The weather system reports suitability scores rather than a general-purpose forecast alone, and its climate endpoint uses historical ERA5 data. Always verify time-sensitive border, visa, safety, toll, and operator information before departure.
