What ViaFrei does
ViaFrei MCP server gives AI assistants access to German transport, road, energy, weather, and place data. Users can ask questions in German or English without knowing the underlying tool names. Responses are generated from the available data and include the source used for the answer.
The service is intended for current travel and location questions: motorway congestion, roadworks, closures, public transport departures, train and transit delays, parking availability, fuel prices, charging locations, hydrogen stations, severe-weather warnings, road icing forecasts, addresses, and OpenStreetMap-mapped places. It can also answer questions about German road rules such as emission stickers and Autobahn speed limits.
Coverage is not uniform across Germany. Live motorway traffic is supported broadly, while non-motorway road information depends on participating states, cities, and publishers. Transit departures come from German timetable data, but realtime delay information is available only when a matching feed exists.
How it works
ViaFrei MCP server is available at https://mcp.viafrei.de/mcp using Streamable HTTP. A compatible MCP client sends natural-language requests to the endpoint, and the service selects the relevant capability. The README provides this Claude setup command:
claude mcp add --transport http viafrei https://mcp.viafrei.de/mcp
The service is free to use and does not require an account, sign-up, or API key. Source attribution is included in answers. The backend combines official German open-data feeds with OpenStreetMap for places and addresses. Charging and parking occupancy are reported only where an operator publishes that information; missing occupancy is not treated as availability.
Users can create watches for changes such as a road closure ending, widespread transit delays, or a DWD severe-weather warning. A watch remains in the conversation that created it. The server supports up to 10 watches per conversation, each lasting up to 24 hours, with a default duration of 3 hours. Notifications depend on the MCP client; the service does not send email or SMS.
Tools and capabilities
The documented capabilities include:
check_road_status for supported traffic reports, roadworks, closures, and bridge conditions.
find_parking for car parks, including live free-space data where published.
find_charging_station for charging locations and available operator information.
find_hydrogen_station for H2 Mobility stations, pump types, and published opening hours.
find_poi for mapped places and company offices, including approximate name matching.
find_address for addresses and the companies, shops, or buildings mapped at them.
The data also supports public-transit departures, delays where realtime feeds exist, fuel-station searches and prices from monitored stations, weather warnings, road-ice forecasts, accessibility questions about station lifts, and reverse geocoding from coordinates. Hydrogen results do not provide price, availability, or working status. OpenStreetMap-based searches cannot find places that are absent from that dataset, and ratings are not included.
Limitations and notes
ViaFrei MCP server is marked as beta, so sources, coverage, and answer behavior may change. AI-generated answers can contain mistakes; important details such as closures, departures, and prices should be checked against the cited source.
Road coverage outside motorways is selective. Fuel prices do not cover every German station, and live parking or charging occupancy exists only for participating publishers. A road watch applies to the road as a whole rather than one specific segment. Hydrogen station data describes the published H2 Mobility network but does not confirm that a station is currently operating or has fuel available.
