What New Mexico Code does
The New Mexico Code MCP server exposes selected New Mexico Statutes Annotated 1978 data through MCP tools. It supports three statute-oriented operations:
nm_statute(citation) retrieves the current text for a section citation such as 30-2-1, NMSA 1978, § 30-2-1, or § 30-2-1. The response includes the catchline, statutory text, chapter name, and history line.
nm_search(query, limit?) searches section catchlines and chapter names. It returns matching citations, catchlines, and chapter names, which can then be passed to nm_statute for full text.
nm_chapters() lists NMSA 1978 chapters, their official names, and the number of sections indexed for each chapter.
The package is an independent integration using New Mexico Compilation Commission material available through NMOneSource. It is listed in the Legal category and does not require an account or API key.
How it works
New Mexico publishes each chapter as one PDF rather than providing separate section documents. The server uses a prebuilt chapter index derived from PDF bookmark structures to map citations to the relevant chapter and page range. It then extracts text around the matched section instead of processing an entire large chapter PDF. Section boundaries are identified from the citation heading and nearby bookmark markers, including the next section or an annotations section.
Search is deliberately limited to the pack's indexed catchlines and chapter names. It does not search the full body text of statutes. The README notes that NMOneSource's own search indexes case law and forms rather than NMSA statute text, so body-text phrases may not produce statute matches.
Setup and configuration
The New Mexico Code MCP server can run as a hosted streamable HTTP endpoint or as a local stdio package. For a hosted connection, configure an MCP client with:
{
"mcpServers": {
"new-mexico-code": {
"url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/new-mexico-code/mcp"
}
}
}
For local execution, use the package through npx:
{
"mcpServers": {
"new-mexico-code": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["-y", "@pipeworx/mcp-new-mexico-code"]
}
}
}
The local process communicates over standard input and output and exposes only this pack's tools. The hosted endpoint also includes shared Pipeworx gateway tools. Direct HTTP calls are available through the gateway's /v1/tools/nm_statute endpoint. No environment variables, signup, or key are required.
Tools and capabilities
Use nm_search when the subject is known but the statutory citation is not. Use nm_chapters to inspect chapter names and indexed section counts. Use nm_statute after finding or already knowing a citation to obtain the section's current text and related metadata. The hosted gateway can also route natural-language questions through ask_pipeworx, while the standalone package does not include those gateway-wide meta-tools.
Limitations and notes
The committed index covers 47 of 84 chapters. The remaining 37 chapters are not currently indexed, and requests involving them report chapter_not_baked rather than silently returning no result. This limitation affects the baked data used by lookup and search; the README describes a resumable index-building script that can be rerun from another IP or after a cooldown, followed by regeneration and redeployment.
Search does not inspect statutory body text, so a phrase appearing only inside a section may not be found. The integration is unofficial and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or published by the upstream provider. The project is released under the MIT license.
