Overview

Myhealthfinder MCP server exposes ODPHP/health.gov preventive-service and health-topic guidance through MCP tools. It can return USPSTF-based recommendations using age, sex, and optional pregnancy, tobacco, or sexual-activity details, or retrieve searchable topic content and source metadata. Use it when an agent needs screening guidance or plain-language health information from the official catalog, through the Pipeworx gateway or a local stdio process.

Use cases

  • Generate age- and sex-specific preventive screening recommendations
  • Search official health.gov topics by keyword
  • Retrieve plain-language guidance for a health topic
  • Browse health.gov categories before selecting a topic

Key features

  • USPSTF-based preventive-service recommendations
  • Optional pregnancy, tobacco, and sexual-activity inputs
  • Full-text health-topic search
  • Health.gov topic and category browsing

How Myhealthfinder works

What Myhealthfinder MCP server does

Myhealthfinder MCP server provides access to U.S. preventive-service and health-topic information from ODPHP/health.gov. Its main use is answering questions about recommended screenings, checkups, and preventive services for a person of a specified age and sex. The recommendation tool returns USPSTF-based guidance and can also consider pregnancy, tobacco use, and sexual-activity status when those inputs are supplied.

The server also supports topic discovery. An agent can search the health.gov catalog by terms such as colorectal, diabetes, or blood pressure, browse all available topics or categories, and then retrieve the complete guidance for a selected topic. Returned topic data includes readable guidance sections, the official source URL, and, where available, the last-updated date.

How it works

The tools are available through a Pipeworx MCP endpoint at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/myhealthfinder/mcp. That endpoint lists the four pack-specific tools along with shared Pipeworx meta-tools. The gateway can route broader questions through ask_pipeworx, while the pack-specific tools remain directly callable.

A local alternative runs as a stdio MCP process using the @pipeworx/mcp-myhealthfinder package. The local process exposes only the four Myhealthfinder tools and does not add the gateway's shared meta-tools. Clients can also call individual tools over HTTP, such as the preventive-recommendations endpoint, without using an MCP client.

Setup and configuration

For a gateway connection, add the MCP URL to a compatible client as the myhealthfinder server. The README names Claude Desktop, Cursor, and Windsurf as examples. The gateway also provides a full Pipeworx endpoint when an agent needs access to all available packs.

For local use, configure the client to run npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-myhealthfinder as the server command. This mode does not require a Pipeworx account or a gateway round trip. No environment variables are documented as required. The package can also be started directly with the same npx command to verify that it launches.

Tools and capabilities

  • get_preventive_recommendations accepts age and sex, with optional status fields, and returns personalized preventive-service recommendations with topic details and official URLs.
  • search_health_topics performs full-text searches and returns matching topic IDs, titles, categories, and source URLs.
  • get_health_topic retrieves the full plain-language content for a numeric topic ID, including “The Basics” and “Take Action” sections.
  • list_health_topics lists the health.gov topic catalog or its categories, supporting discovery before a search or topic lookup.

Limitations and notes

The Myhealthfinder MCP server is focused on ODPHP/health.gov preventive-service and health-topic guidance. Topic lookups require a numeric ID, normally obtained from a search or recommendation result. Gateway connections expose additional shared tools, so their tool list is larger than the four pack-specific tools; the local stdio mode does not include those extras. The gateway README states that initial calls do not require an account, while the local mode is explicitly account-free.

Frequently Asked Questions about Myhealthfinder

Myhealthfinder is an MCP server that connects AI clients to ODPHP/health.gov preventive-service and health-topic guidance. Its main tools provide age- and sex-based preventive recommendations, keyword search, topic retrieval, and catalog browsing, with official source URLs and readable guidance returned for relevant results.

Install it locally by configuring your MCP client to run `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-myhealthfinder`. This starts the stdio package without a Pipeworx account. Alternatively, configure the hosted endpoint at `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/myhealthfinder/mcp` instead of running a local process.

Yes, Cursor is named as a supported MCP client example in the README. Add the hosted Myhealthfinder MCP URL to Cursor, or configure Cursor to launch the local `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-myhealthfinder` stdio server.

Search with `search_health_topics`, then pass a returned numeric ID to `get_health_topic`. You can also use `list_health_topics` to browse the full catalog or categories before searching. Results include titles, categories, source URLs, and readable topic guidance.
