How Rakuten MCP works
What mrslbt/rakuten-mcp MCP server does
mrslbt/rakuten-mcp MCP server connects MCP-compatible agents to the Rakuten Web Service API. Its 28 read-only tools cover six product families: Rakuten Ichiba marketplace, Rakuten Books, Rakuten Travel, Rakuten Recipe, Rakuten Kobo, and Rakuten GORA.
The server supports product discovery, catalogue lookup, category exploration, rankings, price comparison, hotel searches, recipe rankings, eBook searches, and golf-course or reservation-plan searches. Responses can include prices, review information, images, addresses, availability, direct product or booking URLs, and service-specific metadata. The tools perform HTTP GET requests only; they do not create, update, or delete Rakuten data.
How it works
The MCP process accepts tool calls from an agent and forwards them to the corresponding Rakuten API endpoint. Each API family is organized separately, and tool descriptions are provided in English and Japanese.
For multi-step searches, use the hierarchy tools first. For example, ichiba_genre_search can provide a genre ID for marketplace searches, books_genre_search narrows Rakuten Books queries, travel_get_area_class supplies hotel area codes, and recipe_category_list supplies recipe category IDs. Kobo and GORA also provide dedicated discovery tools for genres and golf courses.
The server includes retry handling for HTTP 429 and 5xx responses, including support for Retry-After, and exposes typed errors for configuration, authentication, rate limits, server responses, missing resources, malformed responses, and other failures.
Setup and configuration
Install the published npm package with npx -y rakuten-mcp, or install it globally with npm. A Rakuten Web Service application is required. Registration provides an application ID and an access key; both must be available to the process.
Required environment variables are:
RAKUTEN_APP_ID: the application ID, documented as a UUID on Rakuten's newer platform.RAKUTEN_ACCESS_KEY: the access key, documented as beginning withpk_.
RAKUTEN_AFFILIATE_ID is optional and adds an affiliate ID to item URLs. RAKUTEN_MAX_RETRIES optionally changes the retry count; the documented default is 3. The README provides MCP configuration examples for Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, Cline, and Continue. HTTP and stdio transports are supported.
Tools and capabilities
The tool groups provide these capabilities:
- Search Ichiba items, compare cross-seller product prices, inspect genres and tags, and retrieve bestseller rankings.
- Search Books across categories or target printed books, CDs, DVDs, foreign-language books, magazines, games, and software.
- Find hotels by area, coordinates, or keywords; check dated availability; inspect hotel details, chains, and rankings.
- Browse Recipe categories and retrieve popular recipes with ingredients, estimated time, cost, images, and author information.
- Search Kobo eBooks and navigate its genre hierarchy.
- Find GORA golf courses, inspect course details, and compare date-specific plans by area, course, player count, or budget.
Limitations and notes
Results come from Rakuten's APIs and remain subject to Rakuten terms of service and rate limits. Product and booking responses are promotional listings, so prices and availability should be verified on Rakuten before taking action. mrslbt/rakuten-mcp MCP server is unofficial and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Rakuten Group.
