How Groupon MCP works

What groupon-mcp does

The groupon-mcp MCP server exposes Groupon deal discovery and cart actions through MCP. It can search or browse deals for a city, retrieve one deal with its available options and prices, and list Groupon's category taxonomy. A health-check tool makes one live request to Groupon and reports failures.

Read operations use Groupon's public consumer endpoint and do not require an account or API key. Cart operations are separate: viewing the cart, adding a deal option, and clearing the cart require access to a signed-in Groupon session.

How it works

The server runs as an npm package through npx and communicates with an MCP client over standard input and output. Deal lookups can be used immediately after installation. Cart access normally comes from the ContextMint Bridge browser extension, which obtains the Groupon session from a signed-in Chrome browser when the first cart request is made.

groupon_purchase does not place an order. After a confirmed cart change, it returns a Groupon checkout URL. The user completes payment through Groupon's checkout, which supports the payment methods provided by Groupon, including Apple Pay, Google Pay, cards, or PayPal.

Write operations require confirmation. Depending on the client and confirmation settings, the server either displays a prompt or returns a preview and token that must be supplied on a later call. The token is tied to the previewed deal, option, quantity, and cart state; changed details cause the operation to be rejected and previewed again.

Setup and configuration

Add the package to an MCP configuration using the npx -y groupon-mcp command. Deal browsing needs no environment variables. For cart access, install ContextMint Bridge, load its Chrome extension, sign in to groupon.com, and approve the session request when prompted.

For local development or when the browser bridge is unavailable, set GROUPON_SESSION_COOKIE to the full cookie header from a signed-in Groupon request. Set GROUPON_DISABLE_FETCHPROXY=1 to disable the browser path. The cookie authorizes cart changes and should be handled as a password.

Optional settings control the Groupon GraphQL endpoint, read-cache lifetime, bridge host and port, and bridge identity directory. The endpoint override must remain an HTTPS Groupon URL. Confirmation behavior can be adjusted with MCP_CONFIRM_MODE, MCP_CONFIRM_ELICITATION, MCP_CONFIRM_TTL_SECONDS, and MCP_CONFIRM_SECRET.

Limitations and notes

The groupon-mcp MCP server depends on Groupon's public read endpoint and cart behavior, so network availability and endpoint responses can affect results. Cart tools only send the session to an HTTPS Groupon endpoint. Clearing the cart removes line items, not a completed order, and a partial failure reports which items were removed.

The server does not complete checkout or payment. Browser-based sign-in currently requires Chrome because Safari support is not available in the described setup. Read responses can be cached; GROUPON_CACHE_TTL=0 disables that cache, while a longer value may help when rate limits are encountered.
