The mcp-sap-docs MCP server exposes SAP documentation and related reference data through MCP tools. Its main workflow is document discovery followed by retrieval: use search with a specific English query, inspect the returned IDs and snippets, then pass an ID to fetch for the complete document.

How it works

Search defaults to BM25 keyword retrieval. When semantic ranking is available, results are combined with keyword results using Reciprocal Rank Fusion. Metadata supports source filtering, source-level ranking adjustments, and separation of sample-heavy material from conceptual documentation.

The search tool accepts controls such as includeOnline, includeSamples, abapFlavor, and sources. Queries should be specific and written in English. For ABAP questions, abapFlavor can distinguish standard ABAP from ABAP Cloud; for broader functional or non-ABAP questions, the documentation advises leaving it at auto.

The server also provides focused tools. abap_feature_matrix checks feature availability across SAP releases. sap_search_objects and sap_get_object_details expose release-state and Clean Core information for SAP objects. sap_community_search retrieves full matching community posts for errors and workarounds. The sap-docs variant adds BTP Discovery Center searches, service details, and local UI5 release-difference analysis.

Setup and configuration

A hosted streamable HTTP endpoint is available at https://mcp-sap-docs.marianzeis.de/mcp. Add the endpoint to an MCP client that supports streamable HTTP.

For repository-based operation, the profile is selected in this order: the MCP_VARIANT environment variable, a .mcp-variant file, or the sap-docs fallback. The sap-docs profile covers broad SAP documentation and Discovery Center tools; the abap profile focuses on ABAP material and adds abap_lint instead.

The UI5 difference tool uses a local all-changes bundle. Its data can become stale, and the response reports metadata about available and resolved versions.

Limitations and notes

Search quality is strongest for English queries because the corpus and ranking are primarily English. Online sources are best-effort and may be slower or unavailable; use includeOnline=false for an offline-only search. Sample-heavy sources can dominate broad queries, so disable includeSamples when conceptual or reference material is preferred.

The fetch tool requires an exact ID returned by search. Community content is returned as Markdown when conversion succeeds, although a post may retain HTML if conversion fails. The UI5 comparison tool only uses its local bundle and cannot fetch newer hosted data at request time.
