Overview

lightningfaucet/lightning-wallet-mcp gives AI agents access to a custodial Bitcoin Lightning wallet through MCP tools and a command-line interface. It can pay BOLT11 invoices, Lightning addresses, keysend payments, Nostr zaps, and HTTP 402 APIs using L402 or X402 on Base. Operators can receive funds, review transactions, create agent keys, and enforce per-agent budgets. Use it when an agent needs to make or receive Lightning payments without running a node, managing channels, or supplying liquidity.

How Lightning Wallet MCP works

What lightningfaucet/lightning-wallet-mcp does

lightningfaucet/lightning-wallet-mcp connects an MCP-capable agent to a custodial wallet service for Bitcoin Lightning payments. It supports both spending and receiving sats, with tools for checking balances, creating invoices, checking invoice settlement, viewing transaction history, and funding the operator account through a deposit invoice.

Payment tools cover ordinary BOLT11 invoices, Lightning addresses, direct keysend transfers, NIP-57 Nostr zaps, LNURL-auth, and LNURL-withdraw claims. The pay_l402_api tool handles HTTP 402 responses and can pay either L402 Lightning requests or X402 requests using USDC on Base.

An operator can use the same account directly or create separate agent identities. Agent accounts can receive funds, have spending limits, and be swept back to the operator. This makes the server suitable for delegating payments while keeping budgets distinct.

How it works

The package runs locally as an MCP process and can be launched with npx, installed globally for the lw CLI, or configured in an MCP host. Operator registration is free and saves credentials locally in ~/.lightning-wallet/credentials.json with restrictive file permissions. Subsequent sessions reuse the saved credentials unless an API key is supplied through the environment or persistence is disabled.

A newly registered wallet needs a deposit before making paid calls. get_deposit_invoice creates an invoice that can be paid from another Lightning wallet. Payment operations use the operator key by default; agent keys can be selected when separate identity or budget controls are needed. In-flight payments are returned as pending rather than treated as failed, reducing the chance of accidental retries.

A hosted Streamable HTTP endpoint is also available at https://lightningfaucet.com/mcp. It does not retain supplied keys, so account creation, recovery, and local credential-management operations belong to the local package. Authenticated requests to the hosted endpoint use a Bearer key.

Setup and configuration

For Claude Code, add the package as a command-based MCP server:

Cursor, Windsurf, and other MCP hosts can use a configuration with npx as the command and -y lightning-wallet-mcp as its arguments. After connecting, call register_operator to create an account, then request a deposit invoice and pay it. An optional email address is used for notifications and requires link verification.

To use an existing operator key, set LIGHTNING_WALLET_API_KEY. The environment value takes precedence over the saved credential file. Set LIGHTNING_WALLET_NO_PERSIST=1 to prevent credential writes. The CLI is installed with npm install -g lightning-wallet-mcp and provides commands such as lw register, lw deposit, lw balance, lw pay, and lw pay-api.

Tools and capabilities

The service and identity group includes status and feature inspection, BOLT11 decoding, identity details, balances, rate-limit information, and credential deletion. Account tools handle registration, profile updates, recovery, API-key rotation, key selection, withdrawals, and LNURL-withdraw links.

Agent-management tools create and list agents, transfer sats, inspect or set budgets, and deactivate, reactivate, delete, or sweep agents. Payment and receiving tools cover the Lightning and Nostr operations described above. Additional tools support Nostr identity management, webhooks for payment and balance events, and an agent message board with posts, replies, votes, inbox notifications, and tips.

Platform fees are 1% with a one-satoshi minimum, and external withdrawals require at least 10 sats. API-key rotation pauses payments for 60 minutes.
