Overview

The Kroger MCP server gives AI agents access to Kroger-family store, product, pricing, and availability data through MCP. It provides tools for locating stores, searching products, and retrieving product details, with store-specific results available when you provide a ZIP code or location ID. Use the hosted gateway for remote access, or run the package locally over stdio. It fits grocery research, price checks, stock questions, and store lookup workflows.

How Kroger works

What Kroger MCP server does

The Kroger MCP server exposes grocery data from Kroger-family supermarkets through three focused MCP tools. Store lookup covers brands including Kroger, Ralphs, Fred Meyer, King Soopers, Fry’s, Harris Teeter, QFC, Smith’s, Dillons, Food 4 Less, and Mariano’s, among others.

kroger_store_locator searches for stores near a US ZIP code. Results can include the store name, address, phone number, opening hours, and a location_id. That location ID can then be used to request store-specific product information.

kroger_product_search searches the national grocery catalog or a selected store. With a ZIP code or location ID, results can include shelf price, promotional price, stock level, and aisle. Without a location, the search returns catalog information but not prices. kroger_product_details provides expanded information for a known product ID, including size, categories, aisle, images, pricing, promotions, and stock where store context is supplied.

How it works

The Kroger MCP server can be reached through the hosted Pipeworx MCP endpoint at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/kroger/mcp. The endpoint lists the Kroger tools along with shared Pipeworx tools such as ask_pipeworx, discover_tools, search_within, and memory-related tools. The exact tool scope is reported by the connection’s initialize response and may change.

The same gateway also exposes HTTP tool calls. For example, a client can send a JSON POST request to the store-locator tool endpoint with a ZIP code. The gateway documentation states that initial calls do not require an account. A full gateway endpoint is also available when an agent needs direct access to all listed data-source packs.

Setup and configuration

For a remote MCP connection, add the hosted URL to a compatible client such as Claude Desktop, Cursor, or Windsurf. For local use, run the published package with npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-kroger and configure the client to launch it as a stdio process. The local mode handles MCP initialization, tool listing, and tool calls for this pack only; it does not include the gateway’s shared meta-tools.

No environment variables or account credentials are specified for the standalone setup. The local package avoids a gateway round trip, while the hosted endpoint provides gateway-level routing.

Tools and capabilities

  • Locate Kroger-family stores by US ZIP code.
  • Return store contact details, hours, addresses, and location IDs.
  • Search grocery products by term.
  • Retrieve store-specific prices, sale prices, inventory status, and aisle information.
  • Retrieve detailed product information by product ID.
  • Use a ZIP code or location ID to add store context to product requests.
  • Ask the gateway to route natural-language questions with ask_pipeworx when using the hosted connection.

Limitations and notes

The Kroger MCP server does not provide store-specific prices or stock information unless a ZIP code or location ID is supplied. Product details require a product ID. The standalone connection exposes only the pack’s three documented tools, whereas the hosted pack endpoint also lists shared Pipeworx meta-tools.

Frequently Asked Questions about Kroger

Kroger is an MCP server that connects AI agents to Kroger-family grocery data through the Kroger developer API. Its main tools locate nearby stores, search products with prices and stock information, and retrieve detailed product records using product IDs, ZIP codes, or store location IDs.

Install it locally by configuring your MCP client to run `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-kroger` over stdio. You can also connect to the hosted endpoint at `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/kroger/mcp` without installing the package.

Yes, Kroger works with Cursor through the hosted MCP URL. Add `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/kroger/mcp` as an MCP server in Cursor, or configure Cursor to launch the standalone package with `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-kroger`.

Provide a ZIP code or `location_id` when calling `kroger_product_search` or `kroger_product_details`. The store locator can find nearby stores and return the location ID; without store context, product search returns catalog data without prices.

Yes, it can return stock information when a product search or detail request includes a ZIP code or location ID. `kroger_product_search` searches by term, while `kroger_product_details` checks a specific product ID.
