Overview

JustHandled Agent Utility Gateway MCP server exposes the JustHandled gateway through a local stdio MCP process. It provides a free catalog tool and one paid tool for each of 32 utilities, with execution funded in USDC on Base and protected by exact-term checks before signing. Use it when an agent needs guarded preflights, maintained-data lookups, or evidence products with versioned receipts. A dedicated low-balance wallet is required for paid calls.

Use cases

  • Inspect product terms before authorizing a paid call
  • Run filename and API contract preflights
  • Generate evidence receipts for agent and channel workflows
  • Query maintained public-source data with labeled snapshots

Key features

  • 32 guarded utilities and data products
  • Free catalog and unpaid preview support
  • Exact-term checks before signing
  • USDC payments on Base mainnet
  • Versioned evidence receipts
  • CLI, JavaScript client, and local MCP server

How JustHandled Agent Utility Gateway works

What JustHandled Agent Utility Gateway MCP server does

JustHandled Agent Utility Gateway MCP server connects an MCP client to the JustHandled Agent Utility Gateway through the @justhandledlabs/agent-client package. The package provides a local MCP server, command-line client, and JavaScript client. In MCP mode, it exposes a free catalog tool and one paid tool for each gateway utility.

The catalog covers 32 products, including guarded preflights, maintained-data lookups, and evidence products. The available product areas include API-response contract drift, webhook contract and replay checks, policy-change evidence, distribution readiness, channel fit, demand records, and the live Chicago Contract Change Packet. Exact product inputs, response contracts, payment terms, and free fixtures are published by the gateway catalog and related machine-readable documents.

Twenty-two products cost $0.05 USDC, while ten evidence-heavy or maintained-data products cost $0.25 USDC. Each successful paid request returns a versioned evidence receipt. Maintained-data products can identify retained normalized snapshots from public sources in that receipt.

How it works

The MCP process runs locally and uses the client package to contact the pinned gateway. Before a paid request, the client makes an unpaid HTTP 402 preview. It checks the gateway origin, Base mainnet, canonical Base USDC, merchant receiver, and the exact product price before signing. The ten higher-priced products use a separately pinned 250,000-base-unit amount; the lower-priced products use 50,000 base units.

A mismatch stops the request before a wallet signature is made. Missing wallet configuration also returns an error rather than attempting payment. The package does not print the private key. Customer inputs and complete customer results are not persisted by the gateway, although maintained public-source snapshots may be retained and disclosed in receipts.

Setup and configuration

Install and run the package through npx:

Terminal
npx --package @justhandledlabs/agent-client justhandled-agent catalog

For MCP clients, configure the server with the npx -y @justhandledlabs/agent-client command and provide JH_EVM_PRIVATE_KEY in the server environment. The key should belong to a dedicated, low-balance Base wallet; the documentation explicitly warns against using a primary wallet key. The wallet is unnecessary for unpaid catalog and preview inspection, but paid execution requires it.

You can inspect a product without spending funds by using the CLI's preview command with JSON input or an example file. Preview validates the returned payment terms but does not sign or transfer funds. The repository includes packaged examples, and the gateway publishes a product catalog, OpenAPI document, and sandbox index.

Tools and capabilities

The JustHandled Agent Utility Gateway MCP server supplies:

  • A free catalog lookup for available products and their terms.
  • One paid MCP tool per gateway utility.
  • Guarded preflight checks for supplied inputs.
  • Maintained-data lookups based on labeled public-source snapshots.
  • Evidence products that return versioned receipts.
  • Utilities covering filenames, agent-run evidence, distribution readiness, community-rule credibility, qualified demand, channel fit, proof-to-channel evidence, channel experiments, and Chicago contract changes.

The CLI also supports direct paid calls and unpaid previews. The package's official MCP Registry identity is io.github.justhandledlabs/agent-gateway; that identity is discovery metadata and does not itself trigger payment.

Limitations and notes

The gateway implementation is not included in this client repository. Payment transfers are crypto transactions and should be treated as irreversible. Only the pinned gateway, network, asset, receiver, and product prices are accepted by the client. Installing or listing the server does not spend funds, but calling paid utilities does require a funded dedicated wallet.

The available product behavior and exact schemas should be checked in the published catalog or OpenAPI document rather than inferred from the MCP server name. Maintained-data products have different retention behavior from ordinary customer inputs, as described in their evidence receipts.

Frequently Asked Questions about JustHandled Agent Utility Gateway

JustHandled Agent Utility Gateway is an MCP server that connects agent clients to the JustHandled gateway over a local stdio process. Its main tools provide a free product catalog and paid utility calls, including guarded preflights, maintained-data lookups, and evidence products paid in USDC on Base.

Install it by configuring an MCP client to run `npx -y @justhandledlabs/agent-client`. Set `JH_EVM_PRIVATE_KEY` for paid calls, preferably with a dedicated low-balance Base wallet. Catalog and preview operations can be inspected without providing a wallet.

It performs an unpaid 402 preview and checks the gateway, Base network, USDC asset, receiver, and exact product price before signing. A mismatch aborts the request before payment, and missing wallet configuration produces an error.

Twenty-two products cost $0.05 USDC and ten evidence-heavy or maintained-data products cost $0.25 USDC. The client validates the exact per-product amount before signing, and previews do not spend funds.

Yes. The server uses a standard local stdio MCP configuration, so it can be configured in Cursor as an MCP server. Paid execution still requires the configured wallet environment variable and a funded Base wallet.
