We couldn’t confirm it starts correctly

The install command started, but didn't respond the way we expected when we tried to talk to it.

npx -y gunsnprices-mcp

initialize succeeded but no response to tools/list.

This is an experimental automated check and can have false negatives — missing environment variables, a slow cold install, etc. It doesn’t necessarily mean something’s wrong. Last checked 9d ago.

Overview

The GunsNPrices MCP server parses firearm and ammunition product titles, identifies models and calibers, and calculates ammunition cost per round. It returns links to GunsNPrices comparison pages covering more than 40 US stores, using local read-only data over stdio. Use it to normalize shopping listings or direct an assistant to relevant comparison pages; it does not retrieve live prices.

Use cases

  • Parse firearm and ammunition titles into structured fields
  • Compare ammunition prices by cost per round
  • Find model-specific GunsNPrices comparison pages
  • Normalize caliber names from shopping listings
  • List supported firearm brands and calibers

Key features

  • Read-only stdio MCP server
  • Firearm model recognition for 50 brands
  • Caliber lookup covering 293 known calibers
  • Ammunition cost-per-round calculation
  • GunsNPrices comparison-page discovery
  • Offline operation without an API key

How GunsNPrices works

What GunsNPrices MCP server does

The GunsNPrices MCP server provides read-only tools for structuring firearm and ammunition shopping data. It can turn a product title into fields such as product type, brand, model, caliber, magazine capacity, barrel length, rounds per box, and cost per round. It can also identify firearm model families and exact models from titles or descriptions.

The server works with GunsNPrices comparison-page links for models, brands, and calibers. Those pages cover price comparisons across more than 40 US gun and ammunition stores. Results prioritize the most specific page available, such as a model page before a broader brand or search page.

This fits the E-Commerce category when an assistant needs to clean product data, compare ammunition unit costs, or route a user to a relevant GunsNPrices page. It is not a purchasing or transaction tool.

How it works

The server runs locally through the Model Context Protocol over stdio. Its parsing behavior comes from the open-source gunsnprices parser, while comparison URLs come from a snapshot of GunsNPrices page links. The tools operate offline and do not require an API key.

For firearm recognition, the parser supports 50 brands and can decode Glock part numbers. Caliber lookup covers 293 known calibers, including inputs such as 9mm Luger, 300 BLK, 12ga, and 6.5 CM. The cost calculation tool accepts a price and round count, or can derive the round count from a supplied product title.

The server does not fetch current prices. When a request asks where an item is cheapest, the GunsNPrices MCP server supplies comparison-page URLs for the assistant or user to open separately.

Setup and configuration

Node.js 18 or newer is required. Install and run the package with npx:

Terminal
npx -y gunsnprices-mcp

For Claude Code, register that command with claude mcp add gunsnprices -- npx -y gunsnprices-mcp. Claude Desktop and Cursor use an MCP configuration with command set to npx and arguments ['-y', 'gunsnprices-mcp']. VS Code uses the same command as a stdio server in .vscode/mcp.json.

A Claude Desktop MCP bundle is also available from the latest GitHub release. Alternatively, build the included Docker image and run it interactively with Docker. No environment variables or API credentials are documented as required.

Tools and capabilities

  • parse_product_title extracts firearm or ammunition details and may include comparison-page links.
  • identify_firearm_model recognizes model families and exact models from a title or description.
  • lookup_caliber maps a caliber expression to a standard name, type, and ammunition price page.
  • cost_per_round calculates unit ammunition cost from price and quantity.
  • find_price_comparison_pages returns model, brand, or caliber comparison links in specificity order.
  • list_supported lists the recognized firearm brands or known calibers.

Limitations and notes

All tools are read-only and offline. The comparison URLs point to GunsNPrices pages but do not contain live price results from the stores. Recognition quality depends on the underlying parser and whether the input contains enough product information. The project reports recognition of the same model as GunsNPrices.com in 99.97% of applicable listings, with caliber identified in 97.8% of firearm titles and 94.9% of ammunition titles where a caliber is found.
