How Edgar works

What Edgar does

Edgar provides MCP access to public filings submitted to the US Securities and Exchange Commission. It is intended for research involving public companies, including financial statements, revenue, debt, risk factors, executive compensation, mergers and acquisitions, insider activity, ownership disclosures, and recent material events.

The data source is SEC EDGAR, where filings are timestamped and immutable. Edgar can return both structured XBRL information and text from filing documents or exhibits. It also exposes citable resource URIs for company filings and facts:

  • pipeworx://edgar/company/{cik}/filings
  • pipeworx://edgar/company/{cik}/facts

How it works

Most requests begin by resolving a ticker or company name to the company's canonical CIK. edgar_ticker_to_cik and resolve_entity support that step. Edgar accepts either padded or unpadded CIK values, while the padded value can be used in resource URIs.

For a quick company-level result, edgar_company_snapshot combines the CIK, recent substantive filings, and headline XBRL figures from the latest annual report. More targeted workflows can list filings, query a tagged concept over time, inspect available company facts, or retrieve the text of a filing or exhibit.

SEC filings are cached by Pipeworx. Filings generally appear on EDGAR within minutes of submission, but cached results may be older; Cache-Control: no-cache and _meta.cache.fresh_until help with freshness checks where supported.

Setup and configuration

Edgar uses SEC EDGAR's public, unauthenticated service. No API key or other authentication credential is required. Pipeworx forwards a polite User-Agent header for SEC API compliance.

Tools and capabilities

  • edgar_company_snapshot: Combine company resolution, recent substantive filings, and headline annual XBRL figures in one call.
  • edgar_ticker_to_cik: Resolve a ticker to its CIK and provide a pointer to the snapshot workflow.
  • edgar_company_filings: List filings with accession numbers, form types, and filing dates.
  • edgar_company_concept and edgar_company_facts: Query XBRL time series or inspect the concepts reported by a company.
  • edgar_companies_by_sic: Find SEC filers in a company's SIC category or browse directly by SIC code.
  • sponsor_to_filer and filer_to_sponsors: Resolve operating or subsidiary names to a listed parent and inspect Exhibit 21 subsidiary disclosures.
  • edgar_product_revenue: Read dimensional product or segment revenue from rendered financial-report data, including foreign private issuers using 20-F or 40-F filings.
  • edgar_filing_exhibit_text: Read 8-K exhibits such as earnings releases and search for operating KPIs.
  • Filing and ownership workflows also cover forms such as 10-K, 10-Q, 8-K, DEF 14A, Form 4, 13F, S-1, 13D, and 13G.

Limitations and notes

XBRL concept coverage varies by filer. A valid concept can return no values when a company does not report it, and revenue concepts can change over time; RevenueFromContractWithCustomerExcludingAssessedTax may be an alternative to Revenues.

Fiscal periods are not directly comparable without accounting for each company's fiscal year-end. Product-level revenue is available only when the filer supplies the relevant dimensional data. Press-release KPIs such as vehicle deliveries may appear in an EX-99.* exhibit rather than the primary 8-K document.

When a filing accession is omitted from filing-text or filing-document requests, the latest filing matching the requested form may be selected. Specify the accession when the exact filing matters. Form arguments differ among tools, although company lookup inputs accept ticker or CIK variants in the relevant workflows.

Frequently Asked Questions about Edgar

Edgar is an MCP server that connects AI agents to the SEC EDGAR public filings database through Pipeworx. Its main tools resolve companies by ticker or CIK, retrieve filings and XBRL facts, find SIC-based peers, trace subsidiaries, extract product revenue, and search filing exhibits. It requires no SEC authentication.

No authentication is required. Edgar uses SEC EDGAR's free public service, while Pipeworx forwards a User-Agent header for SEC API compliance.

Use `edgar_company_filings` after resolving the company with `edgar_ticker_to_cik` or `resolve_entity`. For a combined result containing the CIK, recent substantive filings, and headline annual XBRL figures, use `edgar_company_snapshot`.

Yes. Use `edgar_product_revenue` with a ticker or CIK and a product filter. It reads dimensional revenue data from the SEC's rendered financial report and returns citation details when the filer reports that product-level information.

Use `edgar_filing_exhibit_text` with a ticker or CIK, an applicable filing period, and an optional search term. The tool defaults to the EX-99.* attachment commonly used for earnings or KPI releases attached to an 8-K.
