How Form4API β€” SEC Insider Trading works

What Form4API β€” SEC Insider Trading MCP server does

Form4API β€” SEC Insider Trading MCP server exposes hosted Form4API data to MCP-compatible AI clients. Its coverage includes SEC Form 4 insider filings, proposed-sale notices on Form 144, institutional holdings from Form 13F-HR, and congressional STOCK Act disclosures. The available tools support both individual lookups and broader research workflows.

A typical investigation can begin with search, which resolves a company, ticker fragment, or person to a ticker or CIK. From there, an agent can inspect a company, list its insiders, retrieve filings, or query transactions by date, transaction code, trade category, value, or other supported filters.

How it works

The package starts as a local MCP process and forwards tool requests to the Form4API REST API. research_company combines company details, recent transactions, cluster signals, sentiment, and a buy/sell direction summary in one request. Other tools separate these concerns for more controlled workflows, including get_signals, get_sentiment, get_holdings, and explain_signal.

The transaction and signal tools distinguish scheduled 10b5-1 activity from discretionary trades where documented. Cluster signals and sentiment exclude 10b5-1 trades. get_convergence_signals combines insider cluster purchases with congressional purchases within a trailing window; its strength value is an arithmetic count-based measure, not a predictive score.

Setup and configuration

Install and run the server with npx:

bash
FORM4API_KEY=YOUR_API_KEY npx form4api-mcp

For MCP clients, configure the server with the npx command, the -y form4api-mcp arguments, and the FORM4API_KEY environment variable. After changing configuration, restart the client so the tools are loaded.

The API key is obtained from the Form4API dashboard. Plan restrictions can cause sections of the bundled company research response to be unavailable.

Tools and capabilities

  • Resolve companies and insiders, then retrieve profiles and filing histories.
  • Search, paginate, and inspect Form 4 filings and insider transactions.
  • Review insider career summaries, scorecards, leaderboards, cluster activity, and sentiment.
  • Query Form 144 notices, institutional managers, and 13F-HR positions.
  • Inspect U.S. House congressional trades, politician activity, ticker rollups, and convergence signals.
  • Check API usage, key activity, usage history, and public data-quality metrics.

Limitations and notes

Congressional trade coverage is limited to the U.S. House. Senate electronic filing traffic is blocked for the service, so Senate filters return no matches and include a coverage note. Congressional transaction amounts remain disclosed ranges rather than fabricated midpoint values, and disclosure timing can lag the underlying trade by up to 45 days under the STOCK Act.

Some tools and filters depend on the API plan. Form4API β€” SEC Insider Trading MCP server should therefore be treated as a structured research interface, not as a source of guaranteed predictions or investment outcomes.
