What DataLikers does
The DataLikers MCP server gives MCP-compatible AI assistants access to the DataLikers API, an Instagram and TikTok data platform. It is suited to social media research tasks such as finding users by query, demographic attributes, location, hashtag, follower count, or business category.
The available tools also cover profile details, profile photos, average engagement, posts and reels, caption searches, comments, hashtags, locations, active stories, highlights, music tracks, and aggregate database statistics. The README lists 29 tools across users, media, comments, hashtags, locations, stories and highlights, music, and analytics.
DataLikers MCP server is a fit when an assistant needs to answer questions using indexed social media data rather than only generating text from a conversation. For example, a user can ask an enabled assistant to find Instagram users in a particular location with a specified follower range.
How it works
The npm package acts as a local proxy. An AI assistant communicates with the package through the MCP stdio transport, and the package sends requests over HTTPS to the DataLikers API. Responses are returned to the assistant through the same MCP connection.
No data processing is performed locally according to the project documentation. The package forwards requests to the remote service, so API availability, returned data, and request usage depend on DataLikers. The server requires an API key issued by DataLikers.
Setup and configuration
Obtain a DataLikers API key, then configure the package as an MCP server using the client’s MCP settings. The documented command uses npx -y datalikers-mcp, which downloads or runs the npm package without requiring a separate global installation.
Set DATALIKERS_API_KEY to the key from DataLikers. DATALIKERS_URL is optional and can point to a custom server URL for a self-hosted instance. The README includes setup examples for Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, and Windsurf.
For local development, clone the repository, install dependencies with npm install, and build with npm run build. Running tests with DATALIKERS_API_KEY enables integration tests; without it, integration tests are skipped and unit tests still run.
Tools and capabilities
DataLikers MCP server exposes tools including:
- User lookup by username or ID, general search, hashtag and location association, follower rankings, business category, and demographics.
- User photos, engagement averages, posts, reels, top media, caption search, and lookup by Instagram shortcode.
- Comment search and comments left by a user.
- Hashtag search, details, post counts, and top hashtags.
- Location details and name-based location search.
- Active stories, individual stories, highlights, and individual highlights.
- Track search, track details, and top tracks used in reels.
- Database statistics covering totals such as users, posts, and comments.
Limitations and notes
The package is a thin proxy, not a local data-processing layer. A valid DataLikers API key is required for normal operation, and API requests may consume the account’s available request quota. The README states that new users can receive 100 free requests through its signup link, but does not describe data freshness, endpoint-specific limits, or platform coverage for every tool.
