What the Bloom Study Guides MCP server does
The Bloom Study Guides MCP server connects an AI assistant to Bloom, an online service for illustrated learning materials. It supports two workflows: finding guides that already exist on Bloom and submitting the context of a learning conversation for a new guide.
A search request can return links to relevant Bloom guides. For guide creation, the assistant prepares a summary of the conversation, including the questions asked, areas of difficulty, and concepts already understood. Bloom uses that summary to produce a chapter-by-chapter study guide that emphasizes the learner's sticking points.
How it works
The remote MCP endpoint is https://bloombook.cn/api/mcp. It uses Streamable HTTP and does not require authentication at the MCP connection level. The available tools are search_bloom and create_learning_material.
After a conversation has covered a subject, ask the assistant to turn the discussion into study material. The assistant returns a Bloom link. Open the link, sign in to Bloom, and confirm the request. Guide generation typically takes 20–40 minutes, after which Bloom sends a notification. Links remain valid for seven days.
The Bloom Study Guides MCP server is a connector rather than a prompt package. Guide generation happens on Bloom's servers, and the plugin does not bundle prompts or require an API key.
Setup and configuration
The repository provides installer commands for macOS, Linux, and Windows. The Unix command is curl -fsSL https://bloombook.cn/install.sh | sh; PowerShell users can run irm https://bloombook.cn/install.ps1 | iex. The installer detects supported AI clients, preserves existing settings, and reports whether a restart is needed.
For manual setup, clients that accept remote MCP servers can use the Bloom endpoint directly. Cursor and Codex examples are included in the repository. Claude Desktop can connect through npx -y mcp-remote https://bloombook.cn/api/mcp, which requires Node.js. Gemini CLI and Claude Code have repository-specific installation commands. WorkBuddy requires both an MCP configuration and the repository's Bloom skill files.
Tools and capabilities
search_bloom: searches study guides available on Bloom and returns links.
create_learning_material: submits a learning conversation summary for Bloom to turn into study material.
- Conversation-aware guide creation: the submitted material can reflect questions, gaps, and existing understanding.
- Remote access through a single Streamable HTTP MCP endpoint.
Limitations and notes
The conversation summary used to create a guide is stored on Bloom's servers. Do not include names, contact information, secrets, or other sensitive data in that summary. The generated link expires after seven days; request a new one if necessary.
If tools do not appear in a client, restart the application. WorkBuddy also requires trusting the Bloom connector after adding it. In proxy environments, requests to bloombook.cn may need a direct connection or an entry in NO_PROXY, such as NO_PROXY=localhost,127.0.0.1,bloombook.cn.
