What Blender AI MCP Addon MCP server does
Blender AI MCP Addon MCP server brings AI-assisted scene work into Blender through an addon that includes both a visual chat workspace and an MCP endpoint. An AI model can inspect the current scene before making changes, create common primitives and scene elements, alter object relationships and materials, and return visual feedback through viewport captures.
The addon is aimed at workflows where Blender remains open and acts as the working environment. It can support a single assistant for direct edits or a sequential team workflow with managers, workers, and reviewers. The included Studio interface shows conversation activity, scene objects, viewport snapshots, approvals, and task progress.
How it works
Studio can connect to OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini, OpenRouter, OpenCode Zen, Ollama, or custom endpoints. Custom connections may use OpenAI Chat Completions, Anthropic Messages, or Ollama protocols. Models need tool-calling support; image-capable models can also interpret viewport screenshots.
For external automation, the addon runs an authenticated local Streamable HTTP MCP endpoint while Blender is open. OpenCode can be launched from the addon with the Blender connection prepared, and other MCP-compatible clients can use the local endpoint described by the project’s connection guide. Studio requests are authenticated locally, while external clients apply their own approval policies.
Team chains execute tasks in order so scene mutations remain sequenced. A reviewer can approve a result or return findings for one correction attempt; a second failed review stops the workflow.
Setup and configuration
The release package is a ZIP named mcp-for-blender-pro.zip. Installation requires Blender 4.2 or newer on Windows x64:
- Download the ZIP from the project’s Releases page.
- In Blender, open Edit → Preferences → Get Extensions, open the menu, and choose Install from Disk.
- Select the ZIP, enable the addon, and open 3D Viewport → N → MCP Pro.
- Add a provider connection and choose a model.
- Start a chat in Blender or open the Studio window.
Asset services such as Poly Haven, Sketchfab, and Poly Pizza may require service keys. Connection credentials are stored in the user settings, and chat history lasts for the current session.
Tools and capabilities
The Blender AI MCP Addon MCP server provides 21 scene tools across these areas:
- Inspect scenes, objects, and object details.
- Add cubes, spheres, cylinders, planes, lights, and cameras.
- Move, duplicate, delete, and parent objects.
- Apply materials and capture viewport screenshots.
- Run Blender code, look up the Blender API, and describe node types.
- Search for and import assets.
- Export scenes.
Asset searches can use Poly Haven, Sketchfab, and Poly Pizza. The addon’s built-in chat also supports operation approvals, cancellation after the current step, and named undo steps for mutations.
Limitations and notes
The documented release targets Windows x64 and Blender 4.2 or later. Blender must stay open while Studio or an external MCP client is in use. Python validation can detect disallowed operations, but it is not a security sandbox. External MCP clients control their own approval behavior.
Asset use remains subject to the licenses of the imported assets. The project is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Blender Foundation or the listed AI providers.
