What the Bigdata.com MCP server does
The Bigdata.com MCP server gives AI agents access to licensed financial information from Bigdata.com, a financial data service built by RavenPack. Its remote endpoint supports cited search across news, regulatory filings, earnings call transcripts, broker research, and private documents.
The service also exposes financial research features for companies, countries, markets, ETFs, sentiment, and portfolios. Agents can use tearsheets, screens, and an events calendar to structure research tasks such as earnings previews or market analysis. Search responses are designed to include citations, which helps users trace conclusions back to source material.
The repository also contains the official Bigdata.com plugin, which provides 27 financial research skills for supported environments including Claude, VS Code, Copilot CLI, and Cursor team marketplaces. The plugin is separate from the hosted MCP endpoint but can be installed alongside it where the host supports plugins.
How it works
Bigdata.com is accessed remotely at https://mcp.bigdata.com/ using the Streamable HTTP transport. There is no local process or package to run. An MCP-compatible client sends tool requests to the endpoint, and the service returns financial research data for the assistant to use.
Authentication can use OAuth or an API key. OAuth is available natively in Claude, ChatGPT, and Microsoft Copilot Studio. Other hosts can use an OAuth client created through Bigdata.com, where supported. The API-key method sends a key in the x-api-key HTTP header and is documented for clients including Cursor, VS Code, Claude Code, Codex, Cline, and Copilot CLI.
The Bigdata.com MCP server is registered as com.bigdata/bigdata-mcp in the official MCP Registry. The repository provides host-specific installation examples and links to the MCP and skills references.
Setup and configuration
Create an API key through the Bigdata.com platform, then add the remote URL and header to a client configuration that accepts an mcpServers map. Clients with HTTP MCP support can use the endpoint directly. VS Code can store the key as a prompted secret input, while Codex can read BIGDATA_API_KEY through its HTTP-header configuration.
Claude and ChatGPT provide official directory integrations using OAuth. Microsoft Copilot Studio lists Bigdata.com as an available tool. Cursor, Claude Code, VS Code, Cline, and Codex can be configured with the API-key header. The repository also documents one-click or command-line setup paths for several of these clients.
Install the optional research skills separately from the repository marketplace when using Claude, VS Code, Copilot CLI, or Cursor team marketplaces. These skills add task-oriented instructions on top of the MCP tools; they are not required for direct endpoint access.
Tools and capabilities
- Search licensed news, filings, earnings transcripts, broker research, and private documents with citations.
- Retrieve company, country, market, ETF, sentiment, and portfolio tearsheets.
- Run financial screens.
- Query an events calendar.
- Use 27 additional financial research skills through the official plugin.
Limitations and notes
The service is hosted, so this repository is primarily an installation and marketplace source rather than a self-hosted server. Access requires a Bigdata.com account or API key. OAuth availability depends on the client. GitHub documents that Copilot cloud agent and code review do not currently support remote MCP servers using OAuth, so those workflows should use the API-key method.
