Overview

Arcgis Tucson MCP server exposes City of Tucson GIS open geospatial data through three MCP tools. Search datasets by keyword, inspect layer schemas, and query ArcGIS Feature or Map Service layers using filters, field lists, sorting, and pagination. Use it when an agent needs Tucson data about parcels, zoning, public safety, transportation, or city services. It is available through a hosted gateway endpoint or as a local stdio package.

Use cases

  • Find Tucson parcel datasets by keyword
  • Inspect the schema of a Tucson GIS layer
  • Query public safety records with filters
  • Sample transportation or city service features
  • Paginate ArcGIS layer results for analysis

Key features

  • Keyword search across Tucson GIS datasets
  • ArcGIS Feature and Map Service queries
  • SQL-like filtering and field selection
  • Sorting and offset-based pagination
  • Layer schema and capability inspection
  • Hosted HTTP and local stdio access

How Arcgis Tucson works

What Arcgis Tucson does

Arcgis Tucson MCP server connects MCP-compatible clients to City of Tucson GIS open geospatial datasets published through ArcGIS. The available subject areas include zoning, parcels, public safety, transportation, and city services. It is listed in the 🗺️ Location Services category and is intended for agents that need to discover Tucson datasets and retrieve their records or structural metadata.

The integration is unofficial and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or published by the City of Tucson or another upstream provider. The source repository is part of Pipeworx, which also provides a broader gateway for other data sources.

How it works

Arcgis Tucson MCP server provides three pack-specific tools. Start with search_datasets and provide a keyword. Each result can include the dataset name, summary, record count, owner or organization, and a Feature Service URL. Use that URL with the other tools.

layer_info reports a layer’s fields and data types, geometry type, total record count, and capabilities. query_layer retrieves attribute rows and geometry from an ArcGIS Feature Service or Map Service layer. It accepts a SQL-like where expression, comma-separated out_fields, order_by, limit, and offset. To inspect a sample, use where="1=1" with out_fields="*".

Setup and configuration

Arcgis Tucson MCP server can be connected through the hosted streamable HTTP endpoint:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "arcgis-tucson": {
      "url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/arcgis-tucson/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Its tool listing includes the three Arcgis Tucson tools along with shared Pipeworx meta-tools. The connection’s initialize response is the authoritative source for the exact tools exposed at a given time.

For a local connection, run the package with npx as a stdio MCP server:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "arcgis-tucson": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@pipeworx/mcp-arcgis-tucson"]
    }
  }
}

The local mode does not require a Pipeworx account and exposes only this pack’s tools.

Tools and capabilities

  • search_datasets: Find Tucson GIS datasets by keyword and obtain service URLs.
  • query_layer: Retrieve filtered, sorted, paginated records and geometry.
  • layer_info: Inspect fields, geometry, record totals, and layer capabilities.
  • Hosted gateway access: Use shared Pipeworx routing and meta-tools from the gateway endpoint.
  • Local stdio access: Run the package without a gateway round trip.

Limitations and notes

Arcgis Tucson MCP server depends on the available City of Tucson ArcGIS services and their published schemas. Querying a layer requires its URL, normally obtained from search_datasets. The hosted pack endpoint includes additional gateway-wide schemas, while the local package does not. The project is an independent integration rather than an official City of Tucson publication.

Frequently Asked Questions about Arcgis Tucson

Arcgis Tucson is an MCP server that connects AI clients to City of Tucson GIS open geospatial data through ArcGIS. Its main tools search datasets, inspect layer schemas, and query Feature or Map Service layers for filtered records, fields, record counts, geometry, and service metadata.

Run it locally with npx and configure the package as a stdio MCP server. Use command `npx` with arguments `-y` and `@pipeworx/mcp-arcgis-tucson`, or add the documented hosted URL to an MCP client instead.

First call `search_datasets` to find a dataset and obtain its Feature Service URL. Pass that URL to `query_layer`, then provide options such as `where`, `out_fields`, `order_by`, `limit`, and `offset`.

Yes, Arcgis Tucson works with Cursor because the README provides a Cursor MCP configuration using the hosted gateway URL. The same documentation also names Claude Desktop and Windsurf as supported client examples.
