Overview

Arcgis Glasgow connects AI agents to Glasgow City Council’s open geospatial data through ArcGIS services. It provides tools to find relevant datasets, inspect layer schemas, and retrieve filtered records with attributes and geometry. Use it when working with Glasgow datasets covering areas such as parcels, zoning, public works, and city services. It can run through the Pipeworx gateway or locally as a stdio MCP server.

Use cases

  • Find Glasgow datasets about parcels, zoning, or city services
  • Inspect ArcGIS layer fields before writing a query
  • Filter Glasgow GIS records with SQL-like conditions
  • Retrieve selected attributes and geometry from a service layer

Key features

  • Searches Glasgow City Council open GIS datasets
  • Queries ArcGIS Feature Service and Map Service layers
  • Returns layer schemas, geometry types, and capabilities
  • Supports filtering, field selection, ordering, limits, and offsets
  • Runs through Pipeworx or as a local stdio package

How Arcgis Glasgow works

What Arcgis Glasgow does

Arcgis Glasgow exposes Glasgow City Council’s open GIS catalog and ArcGIS service layers through MCP. It is intended for questions and workflows involving Glasgow, Scotland, including searches across datasets related to parcels, zoning, public works, and city services.

The server supports a dataset-to-layer workflow. First, search the catalog for a subject. The result includes a Feature Service URL along with the dataset name, summary, record count, and owning organization. Use that URL with the layer inspection or query tools to work with the underlying data.

How it works

The gateway endpoint is available at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/arcgis-glasgow/mcp. A client connected there receives the Arcgis Glasgow tools together with shared Pipeworx gateway tools. The gateway’s ask_pipeworx tool can route natural-language questions across the broader catalog, including this data pack.

A local package is also available through npm and communicates over stdin and stdout using MCP. The standalone process exposes only the tools for this pack, without the gateway’s shared meta-tools. Direct HTTP calls are available through Pipeworx tool endpoints for clients or scripts that do not use MCP.

Setup and configuration

For a remote MCP connection, add the following server entry to an MCP client:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "arcgis-glasgow": {
      "url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/arcgis-glasgow/mcp"
    }
  }
}

The package can run locally with npx:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "arcgis-glasgow": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@pipeworx/mcp-arcgis-glasgow"]
    }
  }
}

To start the local process directly, run npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-arcgis-glasgow. The gateway also provides a full endpoint at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/mcp for connections that should access all Pipeworx packs directly.

Tools and capabilities

  • search_datasets searches Glasgow City Council GIS datasets by keyword. Results include dataset names, summaries, record counts, owners or organizations, and Feature Service URLs.
  • query_layer queries an ArcGIS Feature Service or Map Service layer using its URL. It accepts SQL-like where conditions, comma-separated out_fields, order_by, limit, and offset values, and returns attribute rows with geometry.
  • layer_info retrieves a layer’s fields and types, geometry type, total record count, and capabilities.

For an initial sample, use where="1=1" with out_fields="*", then refine the query using the layer schema and available attributes.

Limitations and notes

The integration is independent and unofficial; it is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or published by Glasgow City Council or the upstream GIS provider.

The gateway pack endpoint includes shared Pipeworx tools in addition to the three Arcgis Glasgow tools, so its tool list is larger than the local package’s list. The local stdio mode is limited to this pack’s tools. Initial gateway calls do not require an account. Data access depends on the public Glasgow ArcGIS services and the layer URLs returned by dataset search.

Frequently Asked Questions about Arcgis Glasgow

Arcgis Glasgow is an MCP server that connects AI agents to Glasgow City Council’s open GIS datasets through ArcGIS services. Its main tools search datasets, inspect layer schemas, and query feature or map service layers with filters, selected fields, ordering, limits, and offsets.

Install it as a local stdio server with `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-arcgis-glasgow` and configure that command in your MCP client. You can instead connect to the hosted Pipeworx endpoint at `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/arcgis-glasgow/mcp`.

Yes, Cursor is named as a supported MCP client. Add the hosted endpoint as an MCP server, or configure the local `npx` command for a standalone connection.

Search for a dataset with `search_datasets`, take the returned Feature Service URL, and pass it to `query_layer`. Use `where`, `out_fields`, `order_by`, `limit`, and `offset` to control the returned records.

Yes, call `layer_info` with the service layer URL. It returns field names and types, geometry type, total record count, and service capabilities so you can construct a more targeted query.
