Overview

Arcgis Chestercounty connects MCP clients to Chester County, Pennsylvania open geospatial data published through ArcGIS. It lets agents discover datasets, inspect layer schemas, and query Feature Service or Map Service layers using filters, selected fields, sorting, and pagination. Reach for it when an agent needs structured local GIS data such as parcels, addresses, zoning, or public works records. It is available as a hosted streamable HTTP endpoint or as a local stdio package.

Use cases

  • Find Chester County parcel datasets by keyword
  • Inspect GIS layer fields before writing a query
  • Retrieve filtered address or zoning records
  • Page through public works features with geometry

Key features

  • Keyword search across Chester County GIS datasets
  • ArcGIS Feature Service and Map Service queries
  • Layer schema and capability inspection
  • SQL-like filtering with field selection and sorting
  • Pagination with limit and offset controls
  • Hosted HTTP and local stdio access

How Arcgis Chestercounty works

What Arcgis Chestercounty does

Arcgis Chestercounty exposes Chester County, Pennsylvania open geospatial data through three MCP tools. Dataset discovery covers categories such as parcels, addresses, zoning, and public works. Search results identify matching datasets and include each dataset’s name, summary, record count, owning organization, and Feature Service URL.

The returned service URL is the handoff point for the other tools. An agent can inspect a layer before querying it, then retrieve attribute records and geometry from the relevant ArcGIS Feature Service or Map Service layer.

How it works

The normal workflow is to search for a dataset by keyword, select a service URL from the results, and pass that URL to layer_info or query_layer. layer_info reveals the layer’s fields and data types, geometry type, total record count, and supported capabilities. This helps an agent construct a query against the layer’s actual schema.

query_layer accepts an SQL-like where expression, a comma-separated list of output fields, an ordering expression, and limit and offset values. It returns attribute rows along with geometry. A broad sample can be requested with where set to 1=1 and out_fields set to *, while narrower filters and field selections are suitable for targeted retrieval.

The hosted MCP endpoint is available at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/arcgis-chestercounty/mcp. The same gateway also exposes shared Pipeworx tools, including routing and discovery tools, in addition to this pack’s three direct tools. A full gateway connection is available at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/mcp; either gateway URL can route requests through ask_pipeworx.

Setup and configuration

For a hosted connection, add the following MCP server entry to a compatible client:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "arcgis-chestercounty": {
      "url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/arcgis-chestercounty/mcp"
    }
  }
}

The package also runs locally over stdio with no Pipeworx account:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "arcgis-chestercounty": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@pipeworx/mcp-arcgis-chestercounty"]
    }
  }
}

Running npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-arcgis-chestercounty starts the standalone process. In local mode, initialization, tool listing, and tool calls cover only the Arcgis Chestercounty tools; the shared gateway meta-tools are not included.

The hosted tools can also be called over HTTP. For example, dataset search uses a POST request to https://gateway.pipeworx.io/v1/tools/arcgis_chestercounty_search_datasets with a JSON body containing a query value.

Tools and capabilities

  • search_datasets: Find Chester County GIS datasets by keyword and return metadata plus service URLs.
  • query_layer: Retrieve filtered ArcGIS layer records with selected fields, ordering, pagination, and geometry.
  • layer_info: Inspect a layer’s schema, geometry type, record count, and capabilities.
  • ask_pipeworx: On hosted gateway connections, submit a plain-language question that can be routed to the appropriate catalog tool.

Limitations and notes

This is an independent, unofficial integration and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or published by Chester County’s upstream GIS provider. Hosted pack connections include shared Pipeworx meta-tools alongside the three direct tools, so their tool list is larger than the pack’s standalone list. The local stdio package avoids those shared tools and provides only this pack’s tool set.

Frequently Asked Questions about Arcgis Chestercounty

Arcgis Chestercounty is an MCP server that connects AI clients to Chester County, Pennsylvania’s ArcGIS open geospatial data. Its main tools search datasets, inspect layer schemas, and query Feature Service or Map Service layers with filters, selected fields, sorting, pagination, and returned geometry.

Install it locally by configuring an MCP client to run `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-arcgis-chestercounty` with stdio transport. You can also connect to the hosted endpoint at `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/arcgis-chestercounty/mcp` without running the package locally.

Yes, Arcgis Chestercounty works with Cursor through its hosted MCP endpoint or local stdio configuration. Add the server URL to connect through the gateway, or configure Cursor to launch the package with `npx`.

First use `search_datasets` to find a dataset and obtain its Feature Service URL, then pass that URL to `query_layer`. Provide a `where` expression and optionally set `out_fields`, `order_by`, `limit`, and `offset`; use `layer_info` to inspect the schema first.

Yes, the hosted tools can be called over HTTP with POST requests. For example, send a JSON `query` to `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/v1/tools/arcgis_chestercounty_search_datasets` to search datasets directly.
