Overview

Arcgis Carlsbad connects AI agents to City of Carlsbad, California open geospatial data through ArcGIS services. It provides tools to find datasets, inspect layer schemas, and query feature or map service layers using filters, fields, sorting, and pagination. Use it when an agent needs structured access to Carlsbad parcels, zoning, public works, or city-service data. It runs locally over stdio or remotely through the Pipeworx gateway.

Use cases

  • Find Carlsbad parcel and zoning datasets by keyword
  • Inspect ArcGIS layer fields before building a query
  • Filter public works records with SQL-like conditions
  • Retrieve paginated layer attributes and geometry
  • Sample an ArcGIS layer before narrowing results

Key features

  • Searches City of Carlsbad open GIS datasets
  • Queries ArcGIS Feature and Map Service layers
  • Inspects layer schemas and capabilities
  • Supports filtering, field selection, sorting, and pagination
  • Returns attribute rows and geometry
  • Runs over stdio or gateway HTTP

How Arcgis Carlsbad works

What Arcgis Carlsbad does

Arcgis Carlsbad exposes Carlsbad, California GIS data to MCP-compatible clients. Its dataset search covers open geospatial resources such as parcels, zoning, public works, and city services. Search results identify the dataset, describe its contents, show a record count and owning organization, and provide a Feature Service URL for follow-up operations.

The server supports two stages of data access: discover a relevant dataset, then inspect or query the ArcGIS layer behind it. Results from layer queries include attribute records and geometry, making the server suitable for structured lookups as well as map-related data analysis.

How it works

Start with search_datasets and provide a keyword such as parcels or zoning. Take the returned service URL and pass it to either layer_info or query_layer.

layer_info describes the selected layer before querying it. The response includes field names and types, geometry type, total record count, and supported capabilities. This helps an agent construct a valid query and select the fields it needs.

query_layer accepts SQL-like filtering through where, a comma-separated out_fields selection, order_by, and limit and offset pagination controls. To inspect a sample, use where="1=1" with out_fields="*", then narrow the request as needed.

Setup and configuration

The package can run as a local stdio MCP server without a Pipeworx account. Add the following server definition to an MCP client, or run the package directly:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "arcgis-carlsbad": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@pipeworx/mcp-arcgis-carlsbad"]
    }
  }
}

The remote endpoint is available at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/arcgis-carlsbad/mcp and can be configured with a client’s URL-based MCP connection. The gateway also exposes shared Pipeworx meta-tools alongside the pack tools, including routing and discovery functions. A local stdio connection exposes only the Arcgis Carlsbad tools.

The gateway’s HTTP tool interface can also be called directly. For example, dataset search is available through a POST request to /v1/tools/arcgis_carlsbad_search_datasets with a JSON body containing query.

Tools and capabilities

  • search_datasets: Finds Carlsbad GIS datasets by keyword and returns metadata plus a Feature Service URL.
  • query_layer: Retrieves ArcGIS Feature Service or Map Service layer records, including attributes and geometry.
  • layer_info: Returns a layer’s schema, geometry type, record total, and capabilities.
  • Supports field selection, SQL-like conditions, ordering, result limits, and offsets for layer queries.
  • Supports MCP over local stdin/stdout and through the Pipeworx streamable HTTP endpoint.

Limitations and notes

This is an independent integration and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or published by the City of Carlsbad or the upstream ArcGIS provider. Layer queries require a service URL, normally obtained from search_datasets. The gateway connection lists additional shared meta-tools, while the standalone package limits its MCP tool list to this pack. The package is distributed under the MIT license.

Frequently Asked Questions about Arcgis Carlsbad

Arcgis Carlsbad is an MCP server that connects AI agents to City of Carlsbad, California open GIS data through ArcGIS services. Its main tools search datasets, inspect layer schemas with layer_info, and retrieve filtered records and geometry with query_layer from Feature or Map Service URLs.

Install it by configuring your MCP client to run `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-arcgis-carlsbad` over stdio. You can also connect to the remote endpoint at `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/arcgis-carlsbad/mcp` instead of running the package locally.

Yes, Arcgis Carlsbad works with Cursor. Add either the remote MCP URL or the local `npx` command to Cursor’s MCP server configuration, then use the dataset search, layer inspection, and layer query tools.

Query a layer by first calling `search_datasets`, then passing the returned Feature Service URL to `query_layer`. Supply `where`, `out_fields`, `order_by`, `limit`, or `offset` to control the results; use `where="1=1"` and `out_fields="*"` to sample a layer.

Yes, run Arcgis Carlsbad locally without a Pipeworx account by launching `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-arcgis-carlsbad` as an stdio MCP server. The local mode exposes this pack’s three tools without the gateway’s shared meta-tools.
