Overview

The z-image-mcp MCP server connects MCP-compatible assistants to RunAPI’s Z Image model line. It creates text-to-image tasks, optionally waits for terminal results, retrieves task status, and returns output URLs. Pricing can be checked without authentication, while task creation and polling require RunAPI credentials. Reach for it when an agent needs a focused Z Image integration rather than access to the full RunAPI catalog.

Use cases

  • Create Z Image images from text prompts
  • Submit image tasks without waiting for completion
  • Poll existing generation tasks for updated results
  • Check Z Image pricing before creating a task

Key features

  • Z Image text-to-image task creation
  • Optional waiting for terminal task status
  • Task status and payload retrieval
  • Output URL access
  • Unauthenticated pricing lookup
  • Stdio-based MCP host configuration

How Z Image MCP works

What z-image-mcp MCP server does

The z-image-mcp MCP server exposes a focused interface to RunAPI’s Z Image model line. It covers one model variant and one endpoint, allowing an MCP-compatible assistant to create image-generation tasks, inspect their progress, and review current pricing.

The server is intended for workflows where an agent should work specifically with Z Image. It does not provide discovery across the broader RunAPI model catalog; the README points to RunAPI’s general MCP package for that broader use case.

How it works

An assistant sends a text-to-image request through text_to_image. The tool can either return after task creation or wait for a terminal status, depending on the request. Results include the task identifier, current status, and any output URLs returned by RunAPI.

For asynchronous workflows, get_task accepts an existing task reference and returns its current status together with the latest payload. This supports submitting a task first and checking it later. check_pricing retrieves pricing information for a Z Image model and endpoint and does not require authentication.

The available model identifier for text_to_image is z-image. Model availability can change between releases, so pricing or the linked Z Image model page should be used as the current catalog reference.

Setup and configuration

Install the z-image-mcp MCP server through npm and run it over stdio. A Claude Code installation can use claude mcp add with npx -y @runapi.ai/z-image-mcp. Other MCP hosts can use npx as the command and -y @runapi.ai/z-image-mcp as its argument.

Authentication is resolved in this order: the RUNAPI_API_KEY environment variable, the RunAPI configuration file at ~/.config/runapi/config.json, and then no credential. The final state still permits check_pricing, but authenticated operations such as task creation and status retrieval need credentials.

Interactive sign-in stores credentials in the RunAPI configuration file. Headless or CI environments can provide RUNAPI_API_KEY before starting the MCP host. A pre-provisioned configuration file may contain an apiKey value; real keys should not be committed to a repository.

Tools and capabilities

The z-image-mcp MCP server provides these tools:

  • text_to_image: Creates a Z Image text-to-image task, optionally waits for completion, and returns the task ID, status, and output URLs.
  • get_task: Retrieves the current status and latest payload for an existing task.
  • check_pricing: Looks up current pricing for a Z Image model and endpoint without requiring sign-in.

The README names compatibility with Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Windsurf, VS Code, Roo Code, and other MCP-compatible hosts. Example configurations are provided for several of those clients.

Limitations and notes

The integration is scoped to the Z Image model line rather than the complete RunAPI catalog. It currently documents one model variant, z-image, and one endpoint. Pricing and model availability may change, so clients should query current pricing when that information matters.

Task creation and polling are authenticated operations. Without a key or saved RunAPI login, an assistant can check pricing but cannot use the task-oriented tools. The server uses stdio, so the MCP host must support launching a command with npx and the package arguments.

Frequently Asked Questions about Z Image MCP

z-image-mcp is an MCP server that connects AI agents to RunAPI’s Z Image model line and exposes the text_to_image, get_task, and check_pricing tools. It supports task submission, optional waiting for terminal status, later status retrieval, output URL access, and pricing lookup for the available Z Image model and endpoint.

Install it with the npm package through an MCP host using `npx -y @runapi.ai/z-image-mcp`. Claude Code can add it with `claude mcp add z-image -s user -- npx -y @runapi.ai/z-image-mcp`; other hosts can use the same stdio command and arguments.

Set `RUNAPI_API_KEY` before starting the MCP host or use the RunAPI login flow, which stores credentials in `~/.config/runapi/config.json`. Task creation and status polling require authentication, while `check_pricing` remains available without a key.

Yes, `check_pricing` works without authentication. It looks up current pricing for a Z Image model and endpoint, allowing an assistant to inspect pricing before using the authenticated task tools.

Yes, z-image-mcp works with Cursor through the standard stdio configuration. Configure Cursor to launch `npx` with `-y @runapi.ai/z-image-mcp` as the package argument, then provide RunAPI credentials for task creation and polling.
