Overview

The Weatherapi MCP server connects AI agents to WeatherAPI.com for current conditions, forecasts, astronomy data, and marine forecasts. It accepts locations such as city names, coordinates, ZIP codes, and IATA airport codes, with date and duration parameters for supported tools. Use the hosted Pipeworx endpoint for remote access or run the package locally over stdio. It fits agents that need weather or coastal data without implementing direct WeatherAPI.com requests.

Use cases

  • Check current conditions for a city, airport, ZIP code, or coordinate pair
  • Plan trips using multi-day temperature and precipitation forecasts
  • Look up sunrise, sunset, moonrise, or moon phase information
  • Assess coastal waves, swell, water temperature, and wind

Key features

  • Real-time weather and optional air-quality queries
  • Forecasts covering up to 10 days
  • Solar and lunar astronomy data by date
  • Marine forecasts sampled every six hours
  • Hosted HTTP and local stdio connection options

How Weatherapi works

What the Weatherapi MCP server does

The Weatherapi MCP server exposes four tools for querying WeatherAPI.com. current returns real-time conditions such as temperature, weather description, humidity, wind, UV, and optional air-quality information. Locations can be supplied as city names, latitude and longitude pairs, ZIP codes, or IATA airport codes.

forecast provides daily weather predictions for up to 10 days. Results include high and low temperatures, conditions, precipitation probability, total precipitation, and sunrise and sunset times.

astronomy returns sun and moon information for a specified location and date. Available data includes sunrise, sunset, moonrise, moonset, moon phase, and moon illumination.

marine is intended for coastal locations. It provides forecasts for significant wave height, swell height, water temperature, and wind for up to seven days, with samples at six-hour intervals.

How it works

The Weatherapi MCP server can be connected through a hosted, streamable HTTP endpoint or launched as a local stdio process. The hosted pack endpoint is available at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/weatherapi/mcp. It lists the Weatherapi tools along with shared Pipeworx gateway tools, including routing and discovery tools. The full gateway endpoint is also available when an agent needs direct access to the broader catalog.

The local package exposes only the four WeatherAPI.com tools and communicates through standard input and output. The gateway also supports direct HTTP tool calls, such as posting JSON to /v1/tools/current. The ask_pipeworx gateway tool can accept a natural-language question and select a suitable tool and arguments, when using a gateway connection.

Setup and configuration

For a hosted MCP connection, add the pack endpoint to the client configuration:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "weatherapi": {
      "url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/weatherapi/mcp"
    }
  }
}

For local stdio use, configure the package through npx:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "weatherapi": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@pipeworx/mcp-weatherapi"]
    }
  }
}

The standalone mode does not require a Pipeworx account. No environment variables are specified in the provided setup instructions.

Tools and capabilities

  • current: Query present weather conditions and optionally air quality.
  • forecast: Request daily forecasts for one to ten days.
  • astronomy: Look up solar and lunar events for a location and date.
  • marine: Retrieve coastal forecasts for one to seven days at six-hour intervals.
  • ask_pipeworx: Ask a natural-language question through the gateway, which can route the request across available Pipeworx sources.

The Weatherapi MCP server is suited to travel assistants, outdoor planning workflows, location-aware agents, and applications that need marine conditions alongside ordinary weather data.

Limitations and notes

The scoped hosted endpoint includes shared gateway meta-tools in addition to the Weatherapi tools, so its reported tool count is larger than the four tools documented here. The local stdio package does not include those shared tools or gateway-wide routing. Marine results require a coastal location, and forecast durations have separate maximums: 10 days for ordinary forecasts and seven days for marine forecasts.

The service wraps WeatherAPI.com, so requests depend on the data and behavior available from that provider.

Frequently Asked Questions about Weatherapi

Weatherapi is an MCP server that connects AI agents to WeatherAPI.com through the Pipeworx gateway or a local stdio package. Its main tools are current, forecast, astronomy, and marine, covering live conditions, forecasts, astronomical data, and coastal conditions for requested locations and dates.

Run `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-weatherapi` or add it to your MCP client as a stdio server with that command and package argument. This local mode does not require a Pipeworx account and exposes the four WeatherAPI tools.

Use `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/weatherapi/mcp` as the MCP server URL. The hosted endpoint provides the Weatherapi tools and shared Pipeworx gateway tools; direct HTTP calls can also use endpoints such as `/v1/tools/current`.

Add the hosted Weatherapi endpoint to Cursor's MCP configuration, or configure the local `npx` stdio command.

The forecast tool supports up to 10 days, while the marine tool supports up to seven days. Marine results are sampled every six hours and include wave, swell, water-temperature, and wind data.
