We couldn’t confirm it starts correctly

The install command started, but didn't respond the way we expected when we tried to talk to it.

npx -y @theyahia/vk-mcp

initialize succeeded but no response to tools/list.

This is an experimental automated check and can have false negatives — missing environment variables, a slow cold install, etc. It doesn’t necessarily mean something’s wrong. Last checked 11d ago.

Overview

The vk-mcp MCP server connects MCP-compatible AI clients to the VK API for reading and publishing wall content, searching posts, and retrieving VK data. It exposes eight tools covering users, groups, friends, messages, and community statistics in addition to wall operations. The server uses a VK access token, calls VK API version 5.199, and retries selected rate-limit and server-error responses. Reach for it when an agent needs to manage or inspect VK content through either stdio or Streamable HTTP.

Use cases

  • Read recent posts from a VK user or community
  • Publish a post to a VK group wall
  • Search VK posts by keyword
  • Inspect community statistics for a date range
  • Send a VK message through an AI client

Key features

  • VK wall reading and publishing
  • Keyword search across VK posts
  • User, group, and friend lookup
  • VK message sending
  • Community statistics retrieval
  • stdio and Streamable HTTP transport

How Vk MCP works

What vk-mcp MCP server does

The vk-mcp MCP server gives an AI client access to selected VK API operations. It supports reading posts from a user or community wall, publishing a new wall entry, and searching the VK news feed by keywords. It also retrieves user details, community information, friend lists, direct-message sending, and community statistics.

The project is intended for conversational workflows where an agent needs to inspect VK data or perform an action on behalf of a user. Example tasks include finding posts about AI, checking a community’s recent activity, publishing content to a group, looking up a user or community, and requesting statistics for a defined number of days.

How it works

The server sends requests to VK’s API base URL, https://api.vk.com/method/, using API version 5.199. Authentication is provided through the VK_ACCESS_TOKEN environment variable. The access token must have the permissions required by the VK operations the client asks it to perform.

By default, vk-mcp MCP server communicates over stdio, which suits local desktop and editor integrations. It can also start in Streamable HTTP mode with the --http argument. The default HTTP port is 3000; a different port can be selected with the PORT environment variable.

Requests have a 10-second timeout. The server retries up to three times when VK returns a rate-limit response or a server-side 5xx error, using increasing delays between attempts.

Setup and configuration

Install and run the package through npm or npx using @theyahia/vk-mcp. Configure the MCP client with the server command and set VK_ACCESS_TOKEN to a token obtained through VK’s developer site.

For local stdio use, the command is:

Terminal
npx -y @theyahia/vk-mcp

Pass --http to use Streamable HTTP instead:

Terminal
npx -y @theyahia/vk-mcp --http

The README includes configuration examples for Claude Desktop, Claude Code, VS Code, and Cursor. It also documents installation through Smithery for Claude.

Tools and capabilities

The eight exposed tools map to these VK API methods:

  • get_wall uses wall.get to retrieve wall posts.
  • post_wall uses wall.post to publish a wall entry.
  • search_posts uses newsfeed.search for keyword-based post searches.
  • get_user uses users.get for user information.
  • get_groups uses groups.getById for community information.
  • get_friends uses friends.get to list a user’s friends.
  • send_message uses messages.send to send a message.
  • get_stats uses stats.get for community statistics.

The package also lists post-wall and group-stats prompt skills for publishing to a VK group and requesting group statistics over a specified number of days.

Limitations and notes

Actions depend on a valid access token and the permissions granted to it. HTTP mode is available, but the documented default transport is stdio. The project is released under the MIT license.

Frequently Asked Questions about Vk MCP

vk-mcp is an MCP server that connects AI clients to the VK API and exposes tools for wall posts, post publishing, keyword search, user and group lookup, friends, messages, and community statistics. It uses a VK access token and can run over stdio or Streamable HTTP.

Install it with npx by running `npx -y @theyahia/vk-mcp` and set `VK_ACCESS_TOKEN` in the MCP client configuration. The README also provides setup examples for Claude Desktop, Claude Code, VS Code, and Cursor.

Yes, vk-mcp works with Cursor through an MCP server configuration using the npx command and the `VK_ACCESS_TOKEN` environment variable. The README includes a Cursor-compatible JSON example.

Run vk-mcp with the `--http` argument, such as `npx -y @theyahia/vk-mcp --http`. Streamable HTTP uses port 3000 by default, or the port specified through the `PORT` environment variable.

vk-mcp supports eight operations: reading and publishing wall posts, searching posts, retrieving users and groups, listing friends, sending messages, and getting community statistics. These map to VK API methods including `wall.get`, `wall.post`, and `stats.get`.
