Overview

Us Gov Contracts MCP server searches normalized awarded contracts and state government spending records across covered US jurisdictions. It exposes MCP tools for filtering by vendor, agency, keywords, minimum amount, and jurisdiction, plus a tool for discovering coverage and source datasets. Use it to research state and local awards or distinguish contracted values from actual payments; it does not target federal contract data.

Use cases

  • Find awarded contracts won by a vendor in a selected state
  • Compare contract awards with recorded vendor payments
  • Identify agencies issuing contracts above a dollar threshold
  • Inspect jurisdictions and source datasets covered by the pack

Key features

  • Search normalized state and local awarded contracts
  • Search state vendor payments and spending records
  • Filter by vendor, agency, keyword, amount, and jurisdiction
  • List covered jurisdictions and source dataset details
  • Run through hosted MCP, local stdio, or HTTP

How Us Gov Contracts works

What the Us Gov Contracts MCP server does

Us Gov Contracts MCP server provides MCP access to keyless open-data records for awarded US state and local government contracts and state government vendor payments. Contract results represent awards, while spending results represent amounts an agency actually paid. Keeping these datasets separate helps avoid treating an awarded contract value as completed expenditure.

The contract search covers state and county registries across the jurisdictions included in the pack. Results can include a contract ID, winning vendor, title, awarding agency, amount, and relevant dates. The spending search returns vendor, agency, amount, spending category, and fiscal year.

How it works

Us Gov Contracts MCP server exposes three pack-specific tools: gov_contracts_search, gov_spending_search, and gov_contracts_jurisdictions. Both search tools accept filters for vendor and awarding agency. Contract searches also support a contract title or description keyword and minimum dollar amount; spending searches support a spending-category keyword and minimum amount.

Pass a jurisdiction key to target a particular covered source, or omit it to search across the applicable jurisdictions. Use gov_contracts_jurisdictions first when you need to see available keys, coverage level, data platform, source dataset URL, or live record count. Coverage is divided between contract-award jurisdictions and spending/checkbook jurisdictions, so the available keys may differ by search type.

Choose gov_contracts_search for awarded agreements and gov_spending_search for actual payments or expenditures. Federal contract research is outside this pack; the README directs users to USAspending or SAM tools for that scope.

Setup and configuration

The hosted MCP endpoint is:

https://gateway.pipeworx.io/us-gov-contracts/mcp

Add that URL to an MCP client such as Claude Desktop, Cursor, or Windsurf. A hosted pack endpoint also exposes shared Pipeworx gateway tools in addition to the three pack tools, so tools/list returns more tools than the pack table alone. The endpoint can route broader questions through the gateway's shared capabilities.

For a local connection, run the package with npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-us-gov-contracts and configure the MCP client to launch that command. The local process communicates through stdin and stdout and exposes only this pack's tools, without the gateway's shared meta-tools. The same tools can also be called over the gateway's HTTP API with a POST request to the relevant tool endpoint.

Tools and capabilities

  • gov_contracts_search: Find awarded state and local contracts by vendor, keyword, agency, minimum amount, and optional jurisdiction.
  • gov_spending_search: Find state vendor payments by vendor, agency, spending category keyword, minimum amount, and optional jurisdiction.
  • gov_contracts_jurisdictions: Inspect supported contract and spending jurisdictions, source details, coverage levels, and live record counts.

Us Gov Contracts MCP server is suited to supplier research, agency procurement analysis, contract discovery, and comparisons between awarded values and recorded payments. Queries can target one jurisdiction or search all covered jurisdictions at once, depending on the tool and available coverage.

Limitations and notes

Coverage depends on the jurisdictions included in the pack and the availability of their source datasets. The jurisdiction discovery tool is the appropriate way to inspect current coverage and record counts. Contract records are state or local award data, not federal awards. Spending records describe vendor payments and should not be substituted for the value of an awarded contract.

The hosted endpoint and local package differ in scope: the hosted endpoint includes shared Pipeworx tools, while the standalone process serves only the pack-specific tools. No environment variables are required by the documented setup.

Frequently Asked Questions about Us Gov Contracts

Us Gov Contracts is an MCP server that connects AI agents to normalized open-data records for awarded US state and local contracts and state government vendor payments. Its main tools search contracts, search spending, and list covered jurisdictions, source datasets, coverage levels, and live record counts.

Run `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-us-gov-contracts` and configure your MCP client to launch it over stdio. You can instead connect to the hosted endpoint at `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/us-gov-contracts/mcp`.

No, the documented server is keyless. The hosted endpoint requires no account for initial calls, and the standalone package runs locally without a Pipeworx account.

Use `gov_spending_search` for actual state vendor payments or expenditures. Use `gov_contracts_search` when you need awarded contract records and their contract values.

Yes, the README provides Cursor as an example MCP client. Configure Cursor with the hosted MCP URL or the local `npx` stdio command.
