What unesco-heritage-mcp-server MCP server does
The unesco-heritage-mcp-server MCP server gives AI clients access to four UNESCO Data Hub datasets: the World Heritage List, the Intangible Cultural Heritage lists, the World Network of Biosphere Reserves, and UNESCO Global Geoparks. It supports both discovery and record retrieval, so an agent can first narrow a collection with filters and then request the complete entry.
World Heritage searches can include sites on the List of World Heritage in Danger. Intangible heritage searches cover the Representative List, Urgent Safeguarding List, and Register of Good Safeguarding Practices. Biosphere reserve and geopark searches support location-based matching, while World Heritage searches can match a representative point or component part.
How it works
The package can run as a STDIO process or as a Streamable HTTP server. The repository also publishes a hosted MCP endpoint at https://unesco-heritage.caseyjhand.com/mcp. No API key is required. A client can connect to the local process or hosted endpoint and invoke tools using structured parameters.
Search results are paginated, with up to 50 entries per page and a continuation cursor. Several searches return facets across the full result set, such as countries, regions, categories, lists, networks, or status values. Proximity searches accept latitude, longitude, and a radius of up to 5,000 kilometers.
Four resources mirror the record tools: unesco://site/{id_no}, unesco://intangible-heritage/{ich_ref}, unesco://biosphere-reserve/{mab_id}, and unesco://geopark/{ugg_id}.
Tools and capabilities
The nine tools include:
unesco_search_sites and unesco_get_site for World Heritage discovery and full records.
unesco_search_intangible_heritage and unesco_get_intangible_heritage_element for intangible heritage elements.
unesco_search_biosphere_reserves and unesco_get_biosphere_reserve for biosphere reserve data.
unesco_search_geoparks and unesco_get_geopark for UNESCO Global Geoparks.
unesco_list_reference for criteria, country codes, regions, heritage lists, MAB networks, dataset coverage, and data dates.
Full records can include descriptions, coordinates, inscription or designation history, countries, criteria, component parts, areas, populations, linked heritage sites, images, and source-page details. The exact fields depend on the dataset.
Limitations and notes
The server exposes recorded UNESCO data; some values require interpretation. For example, biosphere-reserve zone totals can differ from recorded totals, and a population value of zero may mean either no population or an unreported value. Transboundary biosphere reserves can appear once for each participating country, using separate identifiers.
World Heritage site lookups accept an identifier, digit string, or UNESCO page URL. Intangible heritage lookups accept an identifier or UNESCO page URL. Unknown identifiers return dataset-specific not-found errors. Search fields are dataset-specific: biosphere reserves and geoparks do not provide a dedicated biome or landform field, so descriptive words must be searched through text.
The unesco-heritage-mcp-server MCP server is intended for UNESCO-focused lookup and retrieval rather than general geographic or tourism data. Its documented client installation links cover Claude Desktop, Cursor, and VS Code.
