What the twinmotion MCP server does

The twinmotion MCP server exposes five tools for an automated Twinmotion visualization workflow. It can bring a Revit model into Twinmotion, adjust environmental conditions, create still images, export walkthrough videos, and inspect available scenes or animations.

This makes the server relevant to architectural design workflows that begin with Revit content and finish with rendered images or video deliverables. The supported video formats are MP4, MOV, and WebM. Still-image rendering supports resolutions up to 8K.

How it works

The service runs on Cloudflare Workers and provides an MCP endpoint over HTTP. Its rendering pipeline uses APS, while APS OAuth2 with the client-credentials flow handles service authentication. Cloudflare KV is used to cache tokens.

A client sends MCP tool calls to the configured endpoint. The available operations are separated by task: model import, environment configuration, image rendering, video export, and scene discovery. The repository documents the MCP protocol version as 2024-11-05.

Setup and configuration

Configure the remote endpoint in an MCP client with a URL such as:

Requests require authentication. Use one of the documented header styles, not both:

• x-scanbim-api-key: <your_user_key>
• Authorization: Bearer sk_scanbim_<your_user_key>

The user key is available through the ScanBIM billing settings page. When using a shell variable, the documented example refers to it as SCANBIM_USER_KEY. Switching between header formats can create a separate free-plan account for the alternate key, so keep the format consistent.

Tools and capabilities

The twinmotion MCP server provides these tools:

• tm_import_rvt: Imports a Revit model into Twinmotion.
• tm_set_environment: Changes weather, time of day, and environment settings.
• tm_render_image: Produces a still render, with output up to 8K.
• tm_export_video: Exports a walkthrough in MP4, MOV, or WebM format.
• tm_list_scenes: Returns saved scenes and animations.

Together, these operations cover model intake, scene preparation, rendering, animation export, and basic scene discovery.

Limitations and notes

The service uses a credit-based account model. Successful tool calls debit credits and return HTTP 200. Missing or malformed authentication returns HTTP 401, while insufficient credits returns HTTP 402 with checkout links and a billing-page top-up link.

The documented endpoint is remote rather than a local process. Access therefore depends on the service URL, valid authentication, and available account credits.
