What the TopAlternativesTo MCP server does

TopAlternativesTo MCP server gives an AI assistant structured access to software comparisons from TopAlternativesTo. The catalogue covers more than 360 tools across 59 categories and includes ranked alternatives guides. It is intended for research and comparison rather than for purchasing, account management, or changing software subscriptions.

The service returns pricing read from a vendor’s own pricing page, along with the source URL and the date of the check. It also includes information about who a product suits and who it may not suit. Alternative rankings include a verdict describing the type of buyer each option fits.

How it works

TopAlternativesTo MCP server is available as a hosted, streamable HTTP endpoint at https://topalternatives.to/api/mcp/mcp. An MCP-compatible client sends tool calls to that endpoint and receives read-only catalogue results. No account, authentication token, or API key is required.

A separate npm package supports clients that only accept stdio. Running npx topalternativesto-mcp starts a proxy to the hosted service, so the client can use the same catalogue through a local stdio process.

Responses include a page URL, keeping the underlying comparison material and pricing check date available for follow-up. Pricing should be treated as the vendor’s listed price on the stated date, not as a live quote. Enterprise plans may use negotiated pricing.

Setup and configuration

For Claude Code, add the hosted endpoint with:

Claude Desktop, Cursor, and VS Code can use an MCP configuration entry with the HTTP URL. Stdio-only clients can run npx topalternativesto-mcp instead. The README does not specify environment variables or additional configuration values.

Tools and capabilities

The server exposes three tools:

• search_tools searches the catalogue using a query and optional category, free-tier, maximum-price, and result-limit filters. Matching considers names, categories, taglines, and features, with the best matches first.
• get_tool retrieves one software entry by slug, including its description, pricing source and check date, and suitability notes.
• get_alternatives retrieves the ranked alternatives for a software entry by slug, together with buyer-oriented verdicts.

These tools support questions such as finding project-management products with a free plan below a specified per-seat price, comparing alternatives to an existing product, or checking when a listed price was last verified.

Limitations and notes

TopAlternativesTo MCP server is free and read-only. It does not provide write operations, authentication, or an API key workflow. Its pricing data reflects a dated vendor-page check; prices can change after that date, and enterprise pricing is negotiated.
