Overview

Thesportsdb MCP server exposes TheSportsDB’s sports catalog to AI agents through MCP tools for leagues, teams, players, events, match details, and standings. It can connect through the Pipeworx streamable HTTP gateway or run locally as a stdio package with npx. The free public API key works without signup, while a personal key can provide higher limits and more complete match-detail arrays. Reach for it when an agent needs structured sports data across 50+ leagues rather than general web search.

Use cases

  • Find teams and players by name
  • Track a team’s recent and upcoming events
  • Inspect a fixture’s score, timeline, statistics, or lineup
  • Compare league standings by season
  • Search scheduled events by date and competition

Key features

  • Sports and league discovery
  • Team and player search
  • Recent, upcoming, and daily event lookup
  • Match details, timelines, statistics, and lineups
  • League tables with optional season filtering
  • Local stdio and hosted MCP access

How Thesportsdb works

What the Thesportsdb MCP server does

Thesportsdb MCP server gives MCP-compatible agents access to TheSportsDB’s catalog of sports data across more than 50 leagues. Its tools cover sport and league discovery, team and player lookup, scheduled and recent team events, daily event searches, and league tables.

For a specific fixture, the server provides separate tools for the event record, timeline, statistics, and lineup. These can return the score and venue, visible goals and match incidents, team statistics, or starting players and substitutes. Event IDs come from searches such as events_by_day, team_events_last, or team_events_next.

How it works

The source API is TheSportsDB’s JSON endpoint. A client can connect to the hosted Pipeworx endpoint at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/thesportsdb/mcp, or launch @pipeworx/mcp-thesportsdb locally through standard input and output. The hosted endpoint also exposes shared Pipeworx tools, including routing and discovery functions; the local process exposes only the sports pack’s tools.

The gateway also offers a full endpoint at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/mcp. Both hosted URLs use the same underlying gateway and data sources, but the pack URL lists the ThesportsDB tools directly while the full endpoint lists the wider catalog directly.

Setup and configuration

For a hosted connection, add the pack URL to an MCP client configuration. For local use, configure the command npx with arguments -y and @pipeworx/mcp-thesportsdb, or run that command directly to verify that the process starts.

The public API tier uses key 3, which requires no signup and is the default used by Pipeworx. A registered TheSportsDB key can be supplied as the _apiKey argument when higher limits or additional endpoint access is needed. _apiKey is a tool/request parameter, not a required environment variable.

Tools and capabilities

Available operations include:

  • Listing sports and filtering leagues by sport or country.
  • Searching for teams and players, then retrieving records by ID.
  • Listing a league’s teams and retrieving a league table, optionally by season.
  • Finding a team’s previous or upcoming events and searching events by date, sport, or league.
  • Inspecting event details, timelines, statistics, and lineups.

The event_timeline response checks visible goals against the event’s final score. If the counts differ, it marks the result incomplete and warns against using it for first-scorer or half-time settlement. The statistics and lineup tools report complete: null when exactly five rows are returned because that may indicate either a complete small result or truncation.

Limitations and notes

The free tier can silently cap arrays at five rows. This affects timelines, statistics, and lineups, so a public key may return real data without returning the full match record. Use a supporter key when completeness matters.

Coverage depends on the competition. If an event is not covered, the tools return found: false rather than inventing a result. Timeline responses distinguish an identified event with no available timeline from an unconfirmed event ID, which is important when interpreting missing data.

Frequently Asked Questions about Thesportsdb

Thesportsdb is an MCP server that connects AI agents to TheSportsDB’s sports catalog. Its main tools list sports and leagues, search teams and players, retrieve events, inspect match details, view league tables, and query event timelines, statistics, and lineups. It runs locally over stdio or through the Pipeworx gateway.

Install it by configuring an MCP client to run `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-thesportsdb`. This starts the local stdio server without a Pipeworx account. You can also connect directly to the hosted endpoint at `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/thesportsdb/mcp`.

Yes, Thesportsdb works with Cursor through the hosted MCP URL or the local npx command. Add the server to Cursor’s MCP configuration using either `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/thesportsdb/mcp` or the stdio command.

No, a key is not required for the free public tier because key `3` is used by default. Provide your own key through the `_apiKey` request argument when you need higher rate limits or more complete match-detail results.

The free tier can silently limit arrays to five rows. `event_timeline` detects goal-count mismatches and returns `complete: false`; statistics and lineup results return `complete: null` when exactly five rows are present. Use a supporter key when full coverage is required.
