What The Living Bread does
The Living Bread MCP server exposes read-only tools for Scripture, Christian learning, local discovery, prayer support, service opportunities, and general search. It is intended for AI clients that need structured answers rather than generated religious content. Scripture is read from stored texts, while some pages and community data are retrieved from live Living Bread and Christian Knowledge sources.
Safety handling is explicit. When someone may be in danger, get_crisis_help returns emergency and crisis contacts for a matched country before an agent should offer verses or other support. If a country is not held, the tool does not guess a hotline. For non-emergency requests, find_people_to_pray_with, find_scripture_for, and the discovery tools provide different routes depending on whether the person needs a human, a passage, or a local activity.
How it works
The public MCP endpoint is https://mcp.living-bread.org/mcp. It does not require an account and has a shared limit of 300 requests per minute per IP. The signed-in endpoint is https://mcp.living-bread.org/me; it uses OAuth 2.1 and acts for the approving person. The material describes the listed tools as read-only, while signed-in app actions are handled separately by the platform.
Bundled data includes the King James Version, other stored public-domain or freely licensed translations, Hebrew and Greek information, and cross references. Live requests can reach living-bread.org pages, the Christian Knowledge API, church and gathering directories, and other public data sources. Results identify the implementation used and commonly include source, freshness, provenance, evidence, or content-layer fields. Place searches use approximate locations, and church searches are city-level rather than street-address lookups.
Setup and configuration
For Claude Code, add the remote endpoint with:
claude mcp add --transport http living-bread https://mcp.living-bread.org/mcp
Claude can add the URL as a custom connector. The repository also provides installation or configuration paths for Cursor, VS Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, Windsurf, Cline, and other MCP clients. Choose /me only when the client and user need the signed-in flow. No environment variables or local credentials are specified for the public server.
Tools and capabilities
The Living Bread supports these main operations:
read_scripture reads passages, context, searches, comparisons, original-language data, cross references, translations, and quote verification.
find_scripture_for finds verses for needs, topics, Jesus' teachings, or a dated Daily Bread entry.
learn_the_faith returns Christian teaching, gospel steps, parables, miracles, hymns, names, saints, traditions, prayers, and hard-season pages.
find_churches, find_gatherings, and find_communities locate churches, events, and ongoing groups.
find_people_to_pray_with exposes prayer-watch status, prayer links, approximate nearby prayers, and related doors without contacting anyone.
find_ways_to_serve lists public needs from partner ministries and nonprofits.
see_the_kingdom returns aggregate places, activity, testimonies, and worship links.
start_with_christ provides beginning guidance, journey next steps, and reading plans.
search and fetch support broad lookup and retrieval by returned identifiers.
Limitations and notes
The Living Bread is in the 🔮 Spirituality & Esoterica category and presents explicitly Christian material. It should not replace emergency services, professional care, or a human response in a crisis. The prayer tools do not send requests, contact people, or pray on a user's behalf. Live schedules are host-provided and may be stale; freshness fields do not guarantee that an event is occurring.
Reference ranges spanning chapters are unsupported, and unknown translations, books, places, or identifiers return errors or unresolved results rather than invented data. Search and discovery inputs may be logged anonymously, but the stated logging excludes user IDs. The code is MIT-licensed; the bundled KJV is public domain, while other sources carry their stated attribution and licensing terms.
