What StringSpec MCP server does
StringSpec MCP server connects an AI assistant to the StringSpec database, which contains measurements for nearly 800 tennis strings tested on the same machine and under the same protocol. This makes the recorded values directly comparable across strings.
The service covers practical properties such as stiffness, tension loss, energy return, spin potential, durability, comfort, control, power, and feel. It also includes retail prices, with each price dated. The server does not require an account, and its tools are read-only.
How it works
The remote endpoint is available at https://stringspec.com/mcp. An MCP client sends a tool name and its arguments, such as a string name, material, price range, or player priority. The service returns structured results for the requested tennis-string research.
Measurements are kept distinct from derived information. Playable-life estimates, tension advice, and recommendation fit are calculated from the measured data rather than presented as direct laboratory measurements. The server receives the tool request and arguments, but the supplied privacy statement says it does not store them and does not see the surrounding conversation or the user's account.
Setup and configuration
In Claude, add https://stringspec.com/mcp as a custom connector under Settings, Connectors, and Add custom connector. No sign-in is required.
Claude Code can install the repository's plugin with:
/plugin marketplace add BigBalli/stringspec-mcp
/plugin install stringspec@stringspec
To add only the remote server in Claude Code, use:
claude mcp add --transport http stringspec https://stringspec.com/mcp
Other clients can connect if they support remote MCP servers over Streamable HTTP. The endpoint returns JSON, does not use SSE or sessions, and supports the protocol versions listed in the project documentation.
Tools and capabilities
StringSpec MCP server exposes four tools:
search_strings filters by name, brand, material, gauge, and price. Results can be sorted by popularity, softness, stiffness, spin, tension retention, power, or cost. A call returns no more than 10 strings.
get_string finds one string by name and returns its measurements, database percentiles, elongation at 40, 51, and 62 pounds, estimated playable life, tension adjustment, category rankings, closest alternatives, and dated retail price.
compare_strings compares two or three strings side by side and provides the corresponding comparison page on stringspec.com.
recommend_strings ranks strings against a primary need and optional secondary need. It can account for string pattern, head size, frame stiffness, and a material the user wants to exclude. Each result includes a fit score from 0 to 100 and an explanation.
Limitations and notes
The server is intended for tennis-string research, not general product search. Recommendations and tension guidance are estimates derived from the available measurements. Search results are limited to 10 strings per call, and prices can change because the returned prices are dated.
The repository's MIT license covers its contents, but not the data served by the remote StringSpec MCP server. The documentation names Claude and Claude Code integrations; support for other clients depends on whether they handle the endpoint's remote Streamable HTTP connection.
