Overview

Setlist Fm MCP server connects AI clients to the setlist.fm REST API for artist, venue, setlist, user, city, and country data. It exposes dedicated MCP tools for searching and retrieving concert information, with filters such as artist, date, venue, city, country, and tour. A free setlist.fm API key is required, supplied through the platform configuration or a request parameter. Use it through the Pipeworx gateway or run the package locally as a stdio MCP server.

How Setlist Fm works

What Setlist Fm MCP server does

The Setlist Fm MCP server gives an MCP-compatible AI client access to concert data from setlist.fm. It covers artist records and searches, artist setlists, venue details and venue setlists, individual setlists, user profiles, attended shows, city searches, and the country list.

The underlying data source is the setlist.fm REST API at https://api.setlist.fm/rest/1.0. Queries can use identifiers such as MusicBrainz artist IDs, venue IDs, setlist IDs, and user IDs, or search fields such as artist name, venue name, city, country, year, date, state, and tour name.

How it works

The package exposes the setlist.fm operations as MCP tools. An MCP client can discover the available schemas and call a specific operation with structured arguments. Search and list operations support a p argument for pagination where documented in the tool names.

The Setlist Fm MCP server can be reached in two ways. The hosted Pipeworx endpoint uses streamable HTTP and lists this pack's tools along with shared Pipeworx meta-tools. The standalone package communicates over stdin and stdout and lists only the setlist.fm tools. The hosted endpoint can also route broader questions through ask_pipeworx, while the local process does not provide that gateway routing.

Setup and configuration

For the hosted option, add the Pipeworx endpoint to an MCP client:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "setlist-fm": {
      "url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/setlist-fm/mcp"
    }
  }
}

For local stdio use, configure the package through npx:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "setlist-fm": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@pipeworx/mcp-setlist-fm"]
    }
  }
}

A free setlist.fm API key is required. The README identifies PLATFORM_SETLISTFM_KEY for platform authentication and also documents a BYO key passed as ?_apiKey=.... The package can be started directly with npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-setlist-fm to verify that the local process launches.

Tools and capabilities

The Setlist Fm MCP server provides these operations:

  • Find artists by MusicBrainz ID, name, or other supported artist fields.
  • Retrieve an artist or list an artist's setlists.
  • Search venues and retrieve venue details or venue setlists.
  • Search setlists by artist, year, date, location, tour, or venue.
  • Retrieve one setlist by its ID.
  • Retrieve a user profile or the shows attended by a user.
  • Search cities and list countries.

The same operations are also available through the Pipeworx HTTP tools interface. For example, the hosted API can call an artist operation with a JSON POST request.

Limitations and notes

The hosted pack endpoint includes shared Pipeworx tools in addition to the setlist.fm tools, so its tools/list response is larger than the pack's operation list. The exact scope is reported by the connection's initialize response. The local stdio mode avoids those shared tools but does not include gateway-wide routing.
