What Scandit MCP server does
The Scandit MCP server handles the licensing step for projects integrating the Scandit Data Capture SDK. Its documented role is to create or access a Scandit account flow and obtain trial license keys for use by an application. The server does not provide the SDK integration code itself; that work is covered by the separate Scandit agent skills package.
When paired with those skills, the Scandit MCP server can supply a trial key directly to the project's .env file. This lets an agent complete the licensing portion of an implementation task while the selected skill supplies framework-specific setup, permissions, callbacks, and SDK code.
How it works
The service is exposed at https://ssl.scandit.com/mcp and is added as an HTTP MCP server. A supported MCP client authenticates through a browser, after which the agent can use the licensing service during an SDK setup task. Authentication is interactive rather than based on a documented environment variable or service token.
The normal workflow has two separate parts:
- Install the Scandit skills package so the agent has the relevant product and framework guidance.
- Connect the Scandit MCP server so the implementation skill can request a trial license key.
The skills package can fall back to Scandit's dashboard at https://ssl.scandit.com if the MCP connection is not available. In that case, the key must be obtained through the dashboard flow instead of through the agent.
Setup and configuration
Add the server with an MCP client command such as:
claude mcp add --transport http scandit https://ssl.scandit.com/mcp
Install the companion skills separately:
npx plugins add scandit/skills
The Scandit MCP server is intended to be connected alongside the skills, not as a replacement for them. Once both are available, an implementation skill's license-key step can use the server to place a trial key in the project environment file. The provided setup instructions do not define required environment variable names or a noninteractive authentication configuration.
Tools and capabilities
The documented capabilities are:
- Connect to Scandit's licensing service through MCP over HTTP.
- Support browser-based authentication for the Scandit account flow.
- Provision trial license keys for Scandit SDK projects.
- Make a fetched key available to companion implementation skills through the project's
.env file.
- Work with the Scandit SDK skills package during application setup.
The available material does not enumerate individual MCP tool names or arguments, so integrations should treat the service as a licensing endpoint rather than depend on undocumented tool identifiers.
Limitations and notes
Keys provisioned through the Scandit MCP server are trial keys only. The server's authentication requires a browser, which means the documented flow does not work headlessly or in continuous integration environments. For those situations, use the Scandit dashboard flow instead and manage the resulting key according to the application's deployment process.
The Scandit MCP server does not install the SDK, select a product, or implement scanning features by itself. Product selection and framework integration come from the companion skills, which cover products such as SparkScan, Barcode Capture, MatrixScan, Label Capture, and ID Capture. The server's supported use case is the licensing portion of that broader workflow.
