What Samsung Notes MCP server does
The Samsung Notes MCP server exposes a read-only view of Samsung Notes to compatible AI clients. It can inspect typed text, tables, note metadata, folders, dates, handwriting pages, attached photos, and PDFs. The connector does not edit, move, or delete notes. It can write copies of requested attachments to a chosen folder, but that output is separate from the original notes.
The project supports Samsung Notes files and libraries in two main ways. On Windows, Samsung Notes for Windows can provide synced content after the application is opened and signed in. On macOS and Linux, users export notes from a phone into a local folder and point the connector to that directory.
How it works
The Samsung Notes MCP server runs locally through an MCP client. It has no server account or analytics and makes no network requests, according to the project documentation. The AI client asks the connector for note information, page images, or attachment content as needed.
Handwritten content is exposed as page images rather than converted text. An AI client can request those images and interpret them. For an attached PDF, the connector can provide its text and page images. This makes the server suitable for questions that combine searchable note text with visual material.
The connector reads newly exported files from the configured folder on later questions. It does not synchronize changes back to Samsung Notes.
Setup and configuration
Claude Desktop users can install the released .mcpb extension and complete the installation prompts. The extension can use Samsung Notes for Windows without a folder setting. For exported notes on other platforms, select the export directory in the extension settings.
Other supported clients can run the npm package with Node.js 20.12 or newer:
- Command:
npx -y samsung-notes-mcp
- Exported notes: add
--exports "/path/to/folder"
- Attachment output: add
--save-dir "/path/to/folder"
The default attachment destination for Claude Desktop is a Samsung Notes folder under Documents. It can be changed to another local or synced folder through the extension settings. Exported Samsung Notes files should be placed in the same configured directory.
Tools and capabilities
The available tools are:
notes_overview: reports note sources, folders, totals, and detected problems.
list_notes: searches or browses by words, folder, date, attachments, or handwriting.
read_note: returns typed content, tables, attachment listings, and pages containing handwriting.
get_page_image: retrieves a note page as an image.
get_attachment: reads an attached photo or provides PDF text and page images.
save_attachments: copies requested photos or PDFs into a folder using names selected by the AI client.
These tools support tasks such as finding invoices, reviewing handwritten notes, examining an attached insurance PDF, or organizing copies of attachments. Saving attachments is the only listed operation that writes files, and it does not modify the source note.
Limitations and notes
The Samsung Notes MCP server is read-only with respect to notes. It cannot change note content, rename the original note, move notes, or delete notes. Handwriting is available through page images, so interpretation depends on the AI client’s image-reading ability rather than a dedicated handwriting-text field.
Samsung Notes for Windows is required for automatic Windows-library access. On macOS and Linux, users must first export notes from a phone. Other clients require Node.js 20.12 or newer; Claude Desktop includes the stated runtime requirements. The documentation names Claude Desktop, Claude Code, VS Code, Codex CLI, Gemini CLI, Cursor, and Windsurf as connection options.
