What Run Coach MCP server does
Run Coach MCP server brings Garmin Connect data into MCP-compatible clients for conversational health, fitness, and training analysis. It covers daily metrics such as sleep, steps, heart rate, stress, body battery, HRV, respiration, SpO2, hydration, and floors. Training information includes readiness, training status and load, VO2 Max, race predictions, endurance score, hill score, lactate threshold, fitness age, running tolerance, and progress.
The app also works with activity records. It can retrieve activities by date, show activity details and per-kilometre splits, report heart-rate zones and training effect, and expose chart data, weather, exercise sets, and gear. Workout operations include listing, creating, updating, deleting, and scheduling workouts.
How it works
Run Coach MCP server runs locally as a Node.js MCP process and communicates with Garmin Connect directly. It does not use an intermediate service, and the project states that it does not store or collect app data. Interactive MCP Apps clients can render the sign-in form and charts; clients without MCP Apps support still receive Garmin tools as data.
Authentication is completed once through an MCP Apps client. Saved tokens are shared by MCP clients on the same computer from ~/.garminconnect, where the files use restrictive permissions. Login and MFA operations are app-only, so the language model does not call them or receive the credentials and MFA code. Logging out removes the saved tokens.
Setup and configuration
For Claude Desktop, download the latest .mcpb release and drag it into the application. On first use, Claude prompts for Garmin sign-in.
ChatGPT desktop installation uses its marketplace settings and requires Node.js 20 or newer. Add chenhunghan/garmin-mcp-app as a marketplace source, restart the app, then install Coach from the Run Coach marketplace. The desktop application is required because the app runs on the local computer. Codex CLI can add the same marketplace and plugin from the command line.
Other MCP clients require Node.js 20 or newer and an MCP configuration such as:
{
"mcpServers": {
"garmin": { "command": "npx", "args": ["-y", "garmin-mcp-app"] }
}
}
A client that supports MCP Apps can display the sign-in form and interactive charts. Otherwise, authenticate once through an MCP Apps client before using the saved credentials elsewhere.
Tools and capabilities
Run Coach MCP server supports several common workflows:
- Generate a daily briefing using readiness, sleep, HRV, body battery, resting heart rate, stress, and steps against personal baselines.
- Compare as many as four metrics across periods from four weeks to one year.
- Build a weekly training plan from Garmin data and create or schedule the resulting workouts.
- Inspect per-kilometre splits, including single-lap runs, heart-rate zones, and training effect.
- Visualize activities and training readiness with interactive charts.
Limitations and notes
The project is unofficial and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Garmin. ChatGPT support is described for the desktop app, not a browser workflow. Interactive UI features depend on MCP Apps support in the selected client. The available information is Garmin account data requested by the user; the model does not receive Garmin credentials, tokens, or profile details.
