What Reddit Trends API MCP server does

The Reddit Trends API MCP server provides access to Reddit attention data through Trends API. Its documented capabilities cover historical discussion activity, growth comparisons, and current ranked feeds. A subreddit or topic is supplied as a keyword without the r/ prefix; for example, wallstreetbets.

Historical queries return a time series with dates and a 0–100 index value. When available, results also include absolute volume and source or datatype labels. The index measures attention in the series, not subscriber count.

Growth queries compare a keyword across one or more periods. Supported presets include windows such as 7D, 3M, 12M, YTD, and 5Y; custom recent and baseline dates are also supported. Results include the growth value, direction, dates, and the values used for comparison.

How it works

The client sends requests to https://api.trendsapi.ai/api using a bearer token. Reddit history requests set source to lowercase reddit and use either the get_time_series or get_growth mode. Live feeds use the exact type Reddit Hot Posts or another documented feed type. Mixing a source value with an incompatible type returns a 400 error.

The Reddit Trends API MCP server can return live ranked rows through get_live or get_top_trends. Live responses include the snapshot time, feed type, pagination values, and data rows containing a rank and label. limit and offset support pagination for the live response.

Python users can use synchronous TrendsAPI methods or the asynchronous AsyncTrendsAPI client. The package returns typed Python objects, while JavaScript returns equivalent object fields. Multiple growth windows count as one request, while each successful asynchronous call counts as one billed request.

Setup and configuration

Install the Python package with:

Python 3.9 or newer is required. The key is available from trendsapi.ai and is the same credential used by the HTTP API. It can be read from TRENDSAPI_KEY or passed directly to the client as an api_key argument.

The raw HTTP request requires Authorization: Bearer $TRENDSAPI_KEY and a JSON content type. SDK clients decode the response body for you; raw curl users must decode the nested body field themselves.

Limitations and notes

The Reddit Trends API MCP server is read-oriented. It cannot post, vote, or stream comments. The documented Reddit source is always reddit; the community or topic belongs in the keyword field. A 404 means no series exists for the requested keyword and should not be retried. A 401 usually indicates a missing or invalid key, while a 429 indicates quota exhaustion. Server-side 5xx errors are retried by the client before an exception is raised.

The README documents the Trends API client and HTTP contract, but does not identify MCP-specific transports, named MCP client integrations, or a separate MCP tool manifest. Integration decisions should therefore rely on the available client methods and API endpoint details.
