We couldn’t confirm it starts correctly

The install command started, but didn't respond the way we expected when we tried to talk to it.

npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-quotable

initialize succeeded but no response to tools/list.

This is an experimental automated check and can have false negatives — missing environment variables, a slow cold install, etc. It doesn’t necessarily mean something’s wrong. Last checked 4d ago.

Overview

Quotable MCP server connects AI clients to the free Quotable dataset through tools for retrieving, searching, and filtering quotes. It can run locally as a stdio server or through a hosted Pipeworx MCP endpoint, with no authentication required for initial calls. Use it when an agent needs quote text, author information, or available topic tags. The hosted connection also exposes shared Pipeworx meta-tools, while the local package exposes only the four Quotable tools.

Use cases

  • Retrieve a random quote by topic
  • Search quotes for a phrase
  • Look up an author's biography and quote count
  • List supported quote tags before filtering

Key features

  • Random quote retrieval
  • Keyword and phrase search
  • Author lookup by slug
  • Popularity-sorted tag listing
  • Hosted MCP and local stdio modes

How Quotable works

What Quotable MCP server does

The Quotable MCP server gives an AI client access to quote data through four dedicated tools. It can return a random quote, search by words or phrases, retrieve author information, and list the available tags. Quote results include the text, author, and topic tags where applicable.

Use random_quote when the agent needs an example quote or wants to filter random results by a topic such as Wisdom or Motivational. The tool also accepts an author slug. search_quotes is intended for finding quotes related to a keyword or phrase and returns matching quotes with author names and tags.

get_authors accepts an author slug such as albert-einstein and returns a biography, description, and total quote count. Without a slug, it returns a page from the author list. Because that upstream list is unordered and cannot be searched, passing a known slug is the more reliable approach. list_tags returns the fixed tag collection sorted by popularity.

How it works

The Quotable MCP server is available in two forms. The hosted option uses https://gateway.pipeworx.io/quotable/mcp as a streamable MCP endpoint. A scoped hosted connection lists the four quote tools along with shared Pipeworx meta-tools. Those shared tools can route broader requests through the gateway, so the tool list may be larger than the quote-specific list.

The local option runs the package through standard input and output. It handles MCP initialization, tool discovery, and tool calls for the Quotable tools only. Both forms use the same underlying source and do not require a Pipeworx account for local execution. The repository also documents direct HTTP access to hosted tools, including a POST request for quotable_random_quote.

Setup and configuration

For a hosted connection, add the MCP endpoint to the client configuration:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "quotable": {
      "url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/quotable/mcp"
    }
  }
}

For local stdio execution, use the package through npx:

config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "quotable": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@pipeworx/mcp-quotable"]
    }
  }
}

The package can also be started directly with npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-quotable to verify that it launches. No environment variables or credentials are documented as required.

Tools and capabilities

The four pack-specific tools are:

  • random_quote: Returns a random quote, optionally constrained by a tag or author slug.
  • search_quotes: Finds quotes using a keyword or phrase.
  • get_authors: Retrieves details for a specific author or a page of authors.
  • list_tags: Lists supported tags in popularity order.

The Quotable MCP server is a fit for agents that need quote lookup rather than general web search or a mutable content store. Call list_tags before applying a topic filter when the exact supported tag name is unknown.

Limitations and notes

Tags come from a fixed upstream list, so arbitrary tag values may not work. The unfiltered author response is paginated or page-based and unordered; it is not a searchable author directory. Hosted pack endpoints include shared gateway tools that increase the visible tool count. Use the local package when the client should expose only the quote-related tools, or use the full gateway when direct access to all catalog packs is preferred.

Frequently Asked Questions about Quotable

Quotable is an MCP server that connects AI clients to the Quotable dataset through four tools: random_quote, search_quotes, get_authors, and list_tags. It retrieves quotes, author details, and topic tags without authentication. You can use it through a hosted Pipeworx MCP endpoint or run the package locally over stdio.

Run the package with npx or add its command and arguments to an MCP client configuration. Use `npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-quotable` for local stdio mode, or configure the hosted endpoint at `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/quotable/mcp`.

Yes, Quotable works with Cursor through the documented hosted MCP URL or the local stdio command. Add either connection to Cursor's MCP configuration; the README also names Claude Desktop and Windsurf as supported client examples.

Yes, the local package runs without a Pipeworx account, and the hosted service does not require an account for the first calls. Local mode avoids a gateway round trip and exposes only the four Quotable tools.

Call `list_tags` first to find a supported tag, then pass that tag to `random_quote`. The tag list is fixed and sorted by popularity, with examples including Wisdom and Motivational.
