We couldn’t confirm it starts correctly

We ran the install command but it didn't respond within our test window — this can mean a slow first-time install rather than a real problem.

npx -y @darwinphi/ph-schools-mcp-server

No response to initialize.

This is an experimental automated check and can have false negatives — missing environment variables, a slow cold install, etc. It doesn’t necessarily mean something’s wrong. Last checked 3d ago.

Overview

PH Schools MCP Server MCP server provides local stdio access to the Philippine schools masterlist dataset. It exposes tools for school search, BEIS ID lookup, region and division listing, and dataset statistics. The server uses a local JSON file when available and can download and cache the pinned canonical dataset when the file is missing. Use it for MCP-enabled research and analysis workflows involving Philippine school records.

Use cases

  • Search schools by region and division
  • Look up a school by BEIS ID
  • List Philippine regions and divisions
  • Summarize dataset statistics
  • Sync the masterlist to a local JSON path

Key features

  • Local stdio MCP transport
  • School search with region and division filters
  • BEIS ID school lookup
  • Region and division enumeration
  • Dataset statistics
  • Automatic local dataset download and caching

How PH Schools MCP Server works

What PH Schools MCP Server MCP server does

PH Schools MCP Server MCP server lets an MCP client query and analyze the Philippine schools masterlist dataset through a local process. Its tools support broad searches, direct lookup by BEIS ID, administrative-area discovery, and high-level dataset inspection.

The available tools are:

  • search_schools for finding school records, including searches constrained by fields such as region or division.
  • get_school_by_beis_id for retrieving a school using its BEIS identifier.
  • list_regions for enumerating regions in the dataset.
  • list_divisions for listing divisions, including use cases such as finding divisions within a region.
  • dataset_stats for inspecting summary statistics and key dataset information.

This fits workflows that need structured answers about Philippine schools without manually opening or parsing the source JSON file.

How it works

The server communicates over MCP using stdio. In normal use, an MCP client starts and manages the process from its configuration. VS Code and Claude Desktop examples are provided in the project documentation, and chat prompts can invoke the tools once the server is configured.

At runtime, the server first checks the path specified by PH_SCHOOLS_DATA_PATH. If a dataset file is already there, it uses that file. If the file does not exist, the server downloads the canonical dataset and stores a local copy at the configured path. The default source is the v1.0.1 tagged JSON file in the darwinphi/ph-schools-dataset repository.

Setup and configuration

For normal client use, configure the server with the published npm package and let the client manage its lifecycle. A typical command is npx -y @darwinphi/ph-schools-mcp-server. The repository also supports npm install followed by npm start for local development, testing, and maintenance.

Set PH_SCHOOLS_DATA_PATH to choose the local JSON location. PH_SCHOOLS_DATA_URL can override the download URL for the sync-data command, while PH_SCHOOLS_DATA_TAG selects the canonical tag when no URL is supplied. The package also provides a sync-data command for downloading the dataset manually to a chosen path.

After changing Claude Desktop configuration, restart Claude. In VS Code, a status of Running indicates that the client has already started the server; a separate manual start is usually unnecessary.

Tools and capabilities

PH Schools MCP Server MCP server offers five focused operations rather than a general database interface. Search supports prompts such as finding schools in a named region and division or searching for “High School.” BEIS ID lookup provides a direct record retrieval path when the identifier is known. Region and division listing can help construct valid filters before searching, while dataset_stats provides a way to summarize the loaded dataset.

The published package can also be started from a terminal with npx, and --help is available for checking command usage. These terminal commands do not by themselves connect the process to an MCP chat client; client configuration is required for automatic tool calling.

Limitations and notes

Its records come from the pinned Philippine schools masterlist dataset, identified as the 2020–2021 JSON dataset in the canonical source. Dataset use remains subject to the source terms and applicable policies.

Manual npx startup is intended for one-off commands, debugging, or data synchronization. It should not replace VS Code or Claude Desktop MCP configuration when the goal is automatic chat-based tool use. Running npm start is likewise aimed at repository development rather than routine client-managed operation.

Frequently Asked Questions about PH Schools MCP Server

PH Schools MCP Server is an MCP server that connects AI clients to the Philippine schools masterlist dataset through local stdio. Its main tools search schools, retrieve a school by BEIS ID, list regions, list divisions, and report dataset statistics. It can use a local JSON file or download and cache the canonical dataset.

Install it by configuring your MCP client to run `npx -y @darwinphi/ph-schools-mcp-server`. For repository development, run `npm install` and `npm start`; use that workflow for local changes and maintenance rather than routine client-managed use.

Configure it in `.vscode/mcp.json` as a stdio server with the command `npx` and arguments `-y`, `@darwinphi/ph-schools-mcp-server`. You can set `PH_SCHOOLS_DATA_PATH` in the configuration environment to choose the local dataset file.

Set `PH_SCHOOLS_DATA_PATH` to the preferred local JSON path. The server reads that file when present and downloads the canonical dataset there when it is missing. `PH_SCHOOLS_DATA_URL` and `PH_SCHOOLS_DATA_TAG` provide additional sync-data configuration.
